Arch Rival Roller Derby Girls Have a Style of Their Own
by Bob Moore, SLFP.com
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com) May 14, 2007 - The Art Deco Style of the Thaxton, formerly known as the Eastman Kodak Building, became the perfect backdrop to throw a dazzling party for the second season of the Arch Rival Roller Girls (ARRG).
Members of the Smashanistas, M-80s and the Stunt Devils made their appearance in grand style wearing outfits that enhanced each teams name. The girls set the tone with camouflouge shorts and tops, matching purple tops and shorts, and short red skirts and tight fitting red tops. Many of the girls skated about the room welcoming guests to the 'Black Eye Affair'.
EnYa Nightmare, M-80s, said that off the flat-track, the girls are the best of friends. But that ends when the game starts. "We practice over 10 hours a week and we play to win," she said. "And, this year, we all have great outfits to wear."
When asked if the games were more show than actually playing, EnYa responded, "With three 20 minute sessions during the game, you have to be in shape. These girls are very athletic and proud of their playing ability."
"It's tough and sometimes we get hurt," said Tornado Alli. While recuperating from injuries suffered last season, Alli is now a referee. "I can't wait to get back on the track."
The St. Louis all-female league was founded in 2005 and is owned and operated by the skaters. From the beginning, EnYa said the support has been great and the crowds are enthusiastic about watching the girls race around the track.
The Arch Rival Roller Girls skate at the All American Sports Mall, located by 11133 Lindbergh Business Ct. & Hwy 55. The first bout, featuring M-80s vs. Stunt Devils, will take place, Saturday, May 26, at 7:30 p.m. For more information, call 314-606-0298.
