ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com) Dec 1, 2001 - Hip Hop Mogul Russell Simmons and his wife, St. Louisan Kimora Lee Simmons, made a personal appearance at Famous-Barr Galleria, Saturday, Dec 1, during one of the busiest shoppings days this year.
Russell Simmons' appearance was to promote his new men's fragrance "Premium by Phat Farm", a fresh, warm and spicy scent featured in ultra modern, glass and metal bottles. Kimora was showing her Baby Phat, an aspirational lifestyle line of clothes for young women. An intimate crowd gathered for the informal modeling of Baby Phat clothing by three models and in-store autographs by Russell and Kimora.
Phat Farm, a sportswear brand launched by Simmons in 1992 has evolved into the all-American hip hop standard of clothes known worldwide. Simmons' passion for clothes and success with his men's Phat Farm line prompted him to launch an entire line for women.
His wife, model Kimora Lee, was brought on board as the creative director. Modeling at age 13 in St. Louis, Kimora was a celebrity in the fashion world working extensively with the house of Chanel and its designer Karl Lagerfeld. Today, her fashion experience and exuberance has provided a unique perspective for the youthful line of clothes, from denim separates, outerwear, lingerie and fur-free furs.
Simmons, 42, who was raised in a working class family in New York, co-founded Def Jam Records, which launched the careers of successful hip-hop acts including Run DMC, the Beastie Boys, and LL Cool J. Simmons is the producer of the Def Comedy Jam, which introduced Chris Rock, Chris Tucker, and Martin Lawrence. He is also the producer of films such as The Nutty Professor and Krush Groove.
Together with his brothers, Danny and Joseph, Russell founded the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation in 1995 with a focus on providing disadvantaged urban youth with exposure and access to the arts. Rush Philanthropic's activities include Rush Arts Gallery and Resource Center, which was founded in 1996 to provide an educational environment for exhibitions of works by emerging and established artists of color and of the African Diaspora.

Simmons shares his life experiences and involvement in the hip hop industry in a book, Life and Def: Sex, Drugs, Money, and God, (Crown), written by Nelson George.
The book was released in October, 2001, featuring 16 pages of b&w photos as part of Phat Farm's 10th anniversary promotions and the launch of Simmons' new telecommunications company, Rush Communications.
From the back cover of his book, 'Life and Def: Sex, Drugs, Money, and God,' "Russell and I both grew up in Queens - geographically only a few miles from each other, yet worlds apart. Life and Def is Russell's Art of the Deal, and although his route to fame and fortune could not have been more different than mine, it's an unbelievably fascinating and provocative account that I found hard to put down. Russell is a winner!" - Donald Trump
Simmons also partnered with the Deutsch advertising agency to form a venture called dRush which creates hip advertising campaigns directed at the 18-34 year old marketplace.
The Secret History of Rock
'n' Roll
NEW YORK, (ENTERTAINMENT WIRE), Nov 4, 2001 - KISS's Gene Simmons will host a one hour documentary for Court TV, The Secret History of Rock 'n' Roll, Tuesday, December 4, at 10:00 P.M. ET/PT. From the songs that made the charts, to the up-and-down careers of world-renowned musicians, The Secret History of Rock 'n' Roll travels through the history of rock 'n' roll over the past 50 years and maps the intersections where crime and rock meet.
Gene Simmons co-founded the legendary rock and roll group KISS 28 years ago. Cited the number one group in 1977, 1978, and 1979 by Gallup Poll, KISS has sold 80 million records and holds over 2,500 KISS licenses. Simmons, a consultant to the production, is a keen observer of the music industry and is able to comment on key elements of the story from the perspective of an insider who has lived it.
Through the stories of some of the music industry's prominent players, including Dennis Wilson of The Beach Boys, Ricky Martin, Suge Knight of Death Row Records, Morris Levy, Phil & Ronnie Spector, and Guns n' Roses, The Secret History of Rock 'n' Roll shines a spotlight on the darker side of a business that has provided a musical soundtrack to generations, and views it through Court TV's unique lens of crime and justice.
The Secret History of Rock 'n' Roll features exclusive and illuminating interviews with a wide array of roll 'n' roll legends, players and superstars including Art Alexakis of Everclear, Coolio, Rikki Rockett of Poison, Eric Burdon, and members of top-selling groups including The Runaways, Tommy James & The Shondells and Menudo. Also featured are producers, moguls, legal players and top music journalists such as Dave Marsh, Gerri Hirshey & Steven Ivory.
Combining new interviews, rare photos and exclusive archival footage and tapes, the special will investigate how unlawful behavior, court battles, and prison terms have helped shape some of the most popular music of our times.
"This special edition of The System is part of the network's ongoing look at the relationship of crime to pop culture - the internet, movies, books, sports, and in this case, music," says Schleiff. "Court TV frequently explores the lesser known legal facets of an industry, as well as its brushes with legal issues."
The Secret History of Rock 'n' Roll is produced for Court TV by Frozen Television, a production company founded by veteran television producers Burt Kearns and Brett Hudson.
