Japanese Festival Celebrates 'Gingetsu'
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), Sept 1, 2001 - The 25th Annual Japanese Festival at the Missouri Botanical Garden opened Labor Day weekend with a special procession featuring young participants from the St. Louis Japanese Language School for Children. Dressing in authentic attire, the children walked slowly from the Climatron, pass the butterfly gardens near the Kemper Center to the Yagura Stage set up in front of the lake in the traditional Japanese Garden.

Hundreds of families had gathered under the trees waiting excitedly for the procession to arrive. A resounding performance by the Yatsurugi Taiko drummers greeted dignitaries from sponsoring organizations and city officials. The performance was followed with remarks by the guests.

Nearly 30,000 people are expected to enjoy the color, pageantry, sounds and traditions of Japan at this festival with the theme of gingetsu, or "Silver Moon." Visitors can enjoy bonsai and ikebana demonstrations, cooking demonstrations, ice sculpting, martial arts, a Karaoke contest, tea ceremonies, raku pottery demonstrations, kimono fashion show and a marketplace. Candlelight walks through the Garden under a full moon will be available.

The Japanese Food Court, east of the Ridgeway Center, features specialty dishes served by volunteers and members of the Japan American Society Seinen Committee, Hanamizuki Group, Missouri Zen Center, Mission Inn Jaycees and the Niji Choral Group.

The Festival will open Sunday, from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. and Monday, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Admission includes all entertainment except the tea ceremony. $10 for adults, $7.00 for seniors ages 65 and over, and $3 for members. Children ages 12 and under are admitted free and must be accompanied by an adult.Red Dot
