Restaurants Complain About Phony Health Inspectors ST. CHARLES, MO, (SLFP.com), December 12, 2010 - The St. Charles County Department of Community Health and the Environment urges food establishments to be wary of an individual or group of individuals who appear to be posing as a health inspector completing routine investigations. In addition to the three St. Charles County restaurants who alerted the department, similar complaints have been received from health departments in Iowa and Washington. These incidents have all involved an individual claiming to be a health inspector that requests access to the establishment and information about the staff. "All health inspectors carry proper photo identification signifying their relationship with the department during their examinations," said Gil Copley, Director of the St. Charles County Department of Community Health and the Environment. "Whenever there is a doubt, food facilities should be diligent in asking for proper identification from anyone representing themselves as a county inspector." Food establishment operators - who are contacted by a health inspector that cannot provide proper identification or who requests personal information about staff members - should contact the St. Charles County Department of Community Health and the Environment at 636-949-1800. "We are proud of the relationships we've developed with the many fine food-service facilities throughout this County," Copley said. "Our health inspectors provide a great service to the people and businesses of St. Charles County and strive to present themselves in a professional manner throughout their inspections. We hope that business owners in this community will be proactive in protecting their employees and will help us in stopping this fraudulent activity." The St. Charles County Department of Community Health and the Environment is committed to the protection and enhancement of health and the quality of life for all members of our community. County Acquires 83 Acres For Parkland Near St. Paul ST. CHARLES, MO, (SLFP.com), December 12, 2010 - St. Charles County Government has closed on the purchase of 83.4 acres for a future park along Hackmann Road between Highway 79 and St. Paul. The land was part of the estate of the late Elvera "Babe" Hackmann, a longtime St. Charles County resident who died earlier this year. She had requested that the property be sold for a park. The County paid the appraised price of $7,000 per acre or a total of $583,800 for the 83.4 acres. It will be called Hackmann Park. "Even though general revenue is down and the budget is tight, there is money in the "use tax" fund that may be used only for parks," County Executive Steve Ehlmann said. "This is a dedicated fund, and we are prohibited from using it for our general budget." When the County created the parks department, voters approved a 1/2-cent sales tax on out-of-state purchases of equipment to fund the parks program. Because of the current economic conditions, purchasing vacant land at today's lower prices and then developing the park at a later date is a sensible business model, Ehlmann said. "Babe Hackmann was an outstanding citizen of the County who was always involved in our community," Ehlmann added. "This fulfills her wish and will be part of her legacy." The County now has acquired 2,958 acres of parkland at 15 park sites, nine of which are open to the public. The land near St. Paul will be a park in reserve. It has rolling, sloping hills and has been used as farmland. There are trees on the land, and it is up high, well out of the floodplain. "We're grateful that Babe had the foresight to want this land, which was near and dear to her and her family, to be used as a public park," said Bettie Yahn-Kramer, director of the Parks Department. "Babe was always a civic-minded citizen, and this will be a fitting tribute to her."
