Tour of Missouri
Danny Pate (USA) of Slipstream, greets the cheering crowds as he races across the finish line in St. Charles to win Stage Five of the Tour of Missouri.

Tour of Missouri Races into Historic St. Charles
by Betty Moore, SLFP.com
ST. CHARLES, MO (SLFP.com), September 15, 2007 - Thousands of spectators spent hours Saturday afternoon at Frontier Park in historic St. Charles to see the professional cyclists in Stage Five of the Tour of Missouri.

Families and amateur cyclists past the time browsing through booths in the Health and Wellness Expo Area set up along Riverside Drive. Nearby, the annual MOsaics Missouri Festival for the Arts on Main Street provided an opportunity to view a variety of art and participate in art activities.

Near the Depot area along the Missouri River, several large screens were set up to project the race live for the spectators. Announcers kept the scene lively with a running dialogue describing the 126.8-mile race as it moved through the Missouri wine country from Jefferson City to St. Charles.

Close to 4:00 p.m., photographers began moving into position near the finish line and race officials quickly cleared the streets. The announcers shouted into the speakers as the cyclists drew near.

John Freddy Parra (Colombia) of Team Tecos was holding the lead at 5-kilometers from the finish, with Jeff Louder (USA) of Health Net and Danny Pate (USA) of Slipstream a short distance behind. Quickly the scene change with riders moving forward aggressively. With moments to the finish line, it was Pate, who surged ahead to an eight-second solo win before the cheering crowd.

As the peloton came into sight, the crowd surged forward once again to capture the cyclists with cameras and cell phones as they came across the finish line definitely over the posted speed limit of 30 miles per hour.

"It was really aggressive for the final 12-kilometers," Pate told reporters after the race. "Everyone worked together, so we knew we were going to make it. We didn't even have to try that hard not to get caught."

"I was able to get out of reach and take the win, said Pate enthusiastically. "I was going full there and always attacking at the end," he responded when asked about his successful break from the other riders. "It's good to finally get a win," he laughed.

The Tour of Missouri, with George Hincapie (USA) of Discovery Channel still holding the lead, will conclude with Stage Six in downtown St. Louis on Sunday. See review of
Stage One - Kansas City and Stage Six - St. Louis.
