ST. CHARLES, MO, (SLFP.com), August 18, 2003 - Some of the most popular attractions at the 32nd Annual Festival of the Little Hills in the historic district of St. Charles were the giant shade trees lining the brick-paved streets, cooling tents and the refreshing spray of water hoses.
On Sunday afternoon, thousands of visitors braved the scorching heat and high humidity to enjoy the sights, sounds and customs of French culture.
On Main Street, festival-goers lingered under a tent next to a very busy Lemonade stand to enjoy classical and jazzy music by Bob Culbertson on his beautiful Chapman Stick. Nearby, cool breezes played with handcrafted wind chimes made from recycled glass bottles. Many store owners hung 'cool air inside' signs in their windows hoping to entise the crowds to shop inside.
Over 250 crafters and demonstrating artists had set up booths along Main Street and Frontier Park on the Missouri River to display and sell their work including hand painted clothes, leather accessories, decorative wall hangings, weather vanes, photography, inland wood sculptures, vases, pottery and jewelry.
While many festival-goers came to discover new artists, others came to sample a tantalizing variety of French food and drink. Kettle corn, giant turkey legs, BBQ, snow cones, ice cream and other sweets were traditional crowd favorites.
Live entertainment on several main stages featured cloggers, strolling quartets, big bands and traditional fife & drum corps. The festival also featured a Kid's Corner with face painting, balloons, magic tricks, jugglers and games. A unique display of miniature trains and animated townscapes by Trains Across America captured the imagination of young and old visitors.
