CHARLES COUNTY, (SLFP.com), July 25, 2002 - Nearly 400 Harley Davidson riders gathered at Frontier Park in St. Charles, Thursday, July 25, for special activities highlighting the start of the National Rally from St. Charles to Seaside, Oregon, along the Lewis & Clark Trail. "We are Harley Davidson enthusiasts heading on their fourth cross country ride," said Allen Stith, who was traveling with his wife on their fourth ride. "We particularly like the Lewis and Clark story which we've read. Dr. Steven Ambrose wrote a great book called, Undaunted Courage, which sparked our interest. However, we would ride any ride that Harley Davidson put on. This just makes it special," said Stith. The couple has been riding for 10 years. Donna Costellia, assistant director, St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau, said that the Harley Davidson riders were from all over the world, including couples from Japan, Portugal, France and Australia. "There are also riders from every nearly state. They are starting in St. Charles because this is where Lewis & Clark started their great adventure," said Costellia. Tonight they will be staying at area hotels and bed & breakfasts St. Charles before heading out tomorrow for the ride." Corps members of the Discovery Expedition of St. Charles, dressed in full uniform, eagerly answered questions and provided demonstrations of period life. Hammons Hotels, Inc. has announced plans for a new $36 million, 265-suite Embassy Suites Hotel in St. Charles. "The new construction will provide much-needed meeting space, as well as an upscale, full-service hotel that is critical to elevating Saint Charles to the status of an international tourist destination. In addition, these establishments will have a tremendous economic impact in the area, bringing more than 500 full-time jobs and nearly $1 million in annual tax revenue." Promising to secure a unique niche in the Saint Charles community, the hotel and convention center plan to unite sales and marketing staff at the two facilities to centralize efforts and to promote the hotel and convention center as first-class facilities that complement one another. The combined staff will provide a full-range of event planning assistance and catering.
