spacer K-Mart Announces Closing of St. Peters Store
ST. CHARLES COUNTY, (SLFP.com), March 10, 2002 - St. Peters City officials were notified on Friday, March 8, that the St. Peters K-Mart located off Veteran's Memorial Parkway would be one of three St. Louis area K-Marts closed as a result of the company's bankruptcy proceedings. Company officials have not told City officials at this time when they anticipate actually closing the store.

The St. Peters K-Mart opened the end of 1998 and is located in the former Venture store. The Venture also closed as a result of the company going bankrupt.

St. Peters Economic Development Director Cathy Gillies said in a statement the City is already talking to Kimco Realty Corporation, the leaseholder on the K-Mart building, about what can be done to make it easier to find a new tenant for the large building. "We have a meeting scheduled next week with Kimco to discuss options," said Gillies. "One thing we might suggest is subdividing the building into two or three smaller units. It's too early to do much speculation right now, but we're confident that we'll be able to find a suitable tenant for that parcel."

City Administrator Bill Charnisky was also optimistic about the outlook for finding an occupant. "In spite of a general downturn in the nation's economy, St. Peters has been able to continue positive commercial growth over the past twelve months," said Charnisky. "Last year we saw the opening of Costco, a new Home Depot, Burlington Coat Factory, and other significant retailers. This year we anticipate the completion and opening of Ultimate Electronics, Marshalls, Home Goods, and Macaroni Grill adjacent to Costco, near Westfield Shoppingtown at Mid Rivers."

St. Peters Assistant City Administrator Tim Wilkinson, said while he was disappointed to hear of the store was closing, he was confident a new tenant would be found. "These things happen," said Wilkinson, "It's not the first time a national corporation closed their doors on some or even all of their stores and it won't be the last time. While we feel bad about the disruption these closings cause in the lives of the people who work for them, the City's economy is strong and we don't anticipate the closing to create any financial problems for the City."

Wilkinson also pointed out that several other large stores had closed their doors over the past several years and the City had new tenants for these locations. "The bottom line," said Wilkinson "is that we offer businesses the things they need most-customers with money to spend and an educated work force to hire from."Red Dot

Groundbreaking for O'Fallon Water Treatment Plant
ST. CHARLES COUNTY, (SLFP.com), March 3, 2002 - The City of O'Fallon will have water that is cleaner, safer, softer, and tastes better than ever when the new water treatment plant begins operation in March 2003. The City held a groundbreaking ceremony at the 65-acre site on Firma Road (off Highway 79), just north of the city's landmark Waste Water Treatment Plant.

Black and Veatch designed the plant, which will be built by KCI Construction of St. Louis at a cost of $11 million. Grading has been completed by Kuesel Excavating. Alliance Water Resources will operate the plant on completion, which is expected in March 2003.

The new plant will draw water from five alluvial wells to be drilled in the Mississippi floodplain. Currently, the city gets water from several deep rock wells. When the new plant begins operating, the City will phase in shutdowns of most of the wells over a three-year period. The new plant will have an initial operating capacity of 6 million gallons of water per day, with the ability to expand to 15 million gallons daily.

The water treatment plant will use advanced technology called Reverse Osmosis (R.O.), which removes particles and contaminants as it purifies and softens the water. The process is used commercially in a variety of industries, for such as purifying water for laboratory procedures, to removing saline from salt water. Although there are hundreds of R.O. plants in operation around the world, the City of O'Fallon will have the largest such water treatment plant in the state. O'Fallon is one of the first cities in the Midwest to use the technology for community water treatment.

The new water treatment plant will also protect the water supply by housing all operations under one roof, making the plant easy to monitor. Citizens may monitor construction progress by visiting the City of O'Fallon Website at: www.ofallon.mo.us and selecting Water & Sewer from the menu.Red Dot

Technology/Telecommunications Committee
ST. CHARLES COUNTY, (SLFP.com), Feb 10, 2002 - A steering committee for the St. Charles Chamber Telecommunication/Technology Committee met last week to review goals and objective for 2002.

Linda Howard of OASIS Office Automation and the IT Division of Botz-Deal, and Betsy Ferguson, Applied Data Systems, are co-chairs for 2002. Carl Sandstedt of the St. Charles City-County Library District chaired the committee from 1999 to this year.

The committee was formed in 1999 as a task force under the Chamber's Transportation/Economic Development Committee, at the time chaired by Gary Elmestad of Elmestad and Associates.

The purpose of the task force was to meet members' needs for information about telecommunication and technology and to serve as a forum for issues and options. With these same goals in mind for 2002, the committee plans to develop a survey for area businesses to determine ways the Chamber can assist with programs and issues.

The committee invites interested Chamber members to attend the next meeting on Friday, February 22, for lunch at Culpeppers. Please RSVP to the Chamber at 636-946-0633 or on line at info@stcharleschamber.orgRed Dot
