ST. CHARLES, MO, (SLFP.com), February 23, 2003 - It was a cold, blustery day, but that didn't stop several hundred people from enjoying the festivities of the First Annual St. Charles Jaycees' Frenchtown Mardi Gras Parade, Saturday, February 22.
The parade began at noon, at Kingshighway and Clark Streets behind the Lindenwood University Cultural Center, continued east on Clark Street to Second Street, then North on Second to Sundermeier RV Park.
In a press release, Mardi Gras Parade Chair Gary Matherne, stated that "We see children attending the Grand Parade in Soulard each year and feel that is not an appropriate event for kids," Matherne said. "We want to offer an alternative for parents who want to celebrate Mardi Gras with their children in an alcohol-free environment."
Along the parade route, families and friends gathered to watch the revelry and catch colorful Mardi Gras beads. Members of the St. Louis Moolah Shrine entertained the crowd with their miniature cars.
Kate Westhoff brought her kids and their friends to the parade despite the weather. "We were coming anyway because it was the first parade. If it is somewhat successful, we hope they would continue to have it for years on."
Members of the Greater St. Louis Renaissance Faire wore period costumes for the parade. Ray of St. Louis Moolah Shrine dazzled the kids with his antics. Maddie Brady, four-year-old daughter of Roger and Karen Brady, enjoyed the parade and catching Mardi Gras beads.
