Lambert Announces Art Project as Renovations Begin in ConcoursesST. LOUIS (SLFP.com), November 16, 2010 - Lambert-St. Louis International Airport has announced a major art project as part of a kickoff to $50 million in renovations to its historic Terminal 1 and connecting concourses. Lambert will install art glass screens in Concourses A & C during a year- long renovation project that begins December 1. Renovations projects in Terminal 1 will begin in the spring of 2011. The Airport renovations and the creation of Lambert's Public Art and Culture Project are part of the Airport Experience Program which began in 2008. Nine local artists are now designing concepts for the art glass screens, which are the first public art commissions for Lambert within its new Public Art and Culture Project. The selected artists are Lauren Adams (St. Louis, MO); Sarah Giannobile (St. Louis, MO); Joan Hall (St. Louis, MO); Jana Harper (Clayton, MO); Tom Huck (University City, MO); William LaChance (Maplewood, MO); Eva Lundsager (University City, MO); Edna Patterson-Petty (East St. Louis, IL) and Mel Watkin (Cobden, IL). "We have a wealth of artistic talent in our community and this project is a great first step to enhance the Airport experience, foster civic pride and create a positive lasting impression of St. Louis for our visitors." said Lambert Director Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge. "The glass screens will offer bursts of color and creativity that will give our renovated concourses new and exciting focal points for our travelers." The artists for this project were chosen from a competitive call to artists, selected by the Airport's new Art Advisory Committee with a focus on their past artistic works and the best artistic styles that would translate into glass. Each artist will create designs for three side-by-side glass panels measuring 5.5 ft high by 3 ft wide, with an overall glass "canvas" of nearly 50 square feet. The first art glass screens are scheduled to be installed by the spring of 2011.
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com) - Lambert has grown from a balloon launch location called Kinloch Field to a major transportation center. The originally hayfields were purchased by Major Albert Lambert and renamed it Lambert Field in 1920. The airport has played an important role in air transportation. Col. Charles Lindbergh departed from Lambert Flying Field in 1927 St. Louis for New York to begin his historic non-stop solo flight to Paris, France. The addition of all new signs now makes it possible for Lambert to adopt numerical terminal designations which are commonly used because they are sign friendly, easier to understand and easier to remember. The "Main Terminal" will become Terminal 1. The "East Terminal" will become Terminal 2. Other features of the new signage program includes simple consistent messaging, color-coded symbols, distinct interstate signage, airline terminal locations, improved car rental signage and improved parking lot information.
