by Bob Moore, SLFP.com

ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), Sept 27, 2000 - The tradition of great golfing in Forest Park will continue with its planned renovation and reconstruction as part of the Forest Park master plan. On a bright fall Tuesday morning, preliminary plans for the Norman K. Probstein Community Golf Courses and Youth Learning Center were formally unveiled in Forest Park.

(L. to R.) Mayor Clarence Harmon, Norman K. Probstein and Dan McGuire, Parks Director, hold plans for the proposed new golf course and club house in Forest Park.

Mayor Harmon noted that Forest Park is one of the greatest assets of the region. "What has been made possible by the generosity of Mr. Probstein and the other donors is a new design that will increase the capacity by a third. I think it adds a new dimension to the park as a whole. The course is being name for him and leaves a lasting legacy to the memories of this gentleman," he said.

The mayor added that the project will also have the capability of training young golfers from all social/economic levels. "Inspired by the success of Tiger Woods, many young people are now interested in the sport of golf. We want to help them get trained so they can appreciated golf as a lot of other people do," he said.

Avid golfer, Norman K. Probstein, a prominent hotel developer and businessman in St. Louis, pledged a $2 million initial gift last April. "I grew up across the street and this is like a dream come true for me. I always thought this park was a jewel for the City of St. Louis. When I saw this drive and the plans for what they had envisioned for the park, I couldn't resist," he said. "I think that when this is finished, it will be as big an attraction as downtown St. Louis is with the Arch."

The Norman K. Probstein Community Golf Courses, designed by Hale Irwin, will include three new, distinct, nine-hole courses which will be named for native Missouri Trees: Dogwood, Hawthorne and Redbud. Each course may be played separately or combined with another for an 18-hole round. A new lake will be constructed in connection with development of the courses, which will be connected to the Park's river system.

The new 9,000 square foot clubhouse, designed by St. Louis architectural firm of Powers Bowersox and Associates, Inc., will include a "Pro Shop," "Ruthie's Grill" and a banquet facility called "Champions Room," which will accommodate affairs with up to 200 guests. The clubhouse will a new structure located near Forsyth entrance to Forest Park.

The Youth Learning Center will be comprised of an indoor classroom and an outdoor learning center that can accommodate 25 - 30 students. Instruction in the game of golf will be provided with audio/visual equipment and four covered practice stations. Also planned are a "short game" practice area, a Bermuda chipping green and a practice sand bunker.

The golf school will be directed by a PGA professional and open to all youth ages 7 to 17. Program will include the history of the game, course etiquette, instruction in the grip, stance and putt, the basic swing, iron play, chipping, woods, scorekeeping and on-course play.

The golf course reconfiguration, one of the key components of the $86 million Forest Park master plan that must be completed prior to construction at Grand Basin, the Lindell Pavilion, and other Park facilities. The $12.5 million funding for the project includes $1.6 million from the City of St. Louis, $2 million from the American Golf Corporation who manage the current course, $2.4 million from the Danforth Foundation as part of their "Progress Plus" challenge grant, $4.5 million in private funds from Forest Park Forever and tax credits from the Missouri Development Finance Board.

Construction on the courses will be scheduled so that a combination of 9 holes will be playable at all times. It is anticipated that the entire project will be completed in early 2003.Red Dot
