Diesel Fuel Reaches Record High in Missouri
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), November 11, 2007 - Average costs of diesel fuel in Missouri and across the nation rose to record highs in the last week, as crude oil costs also set new records, according to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources Energy Center's biweekly Missouri Energy Bulletin.
On Nov. 5, the U.S. and Missouri average retail prices for diesel fuel set new records of $3.30 and $3.21 per gallon respectively, representing increases of 32 percent from a year ago. The previous record average of $3.11 for Missouri diesel fuel was set in an Energy Bulletin survey for Oct. 17, 2005.
Missouri's statewide average retail price for gasoline was $2.89 per gallon. Measured against the same period last year, the Missouri average retail gasoline price is 86 cents higher, while diesel fuel prices are over 78 cents higher for the same period.
Missouri fuel costs are mirroring national petroleum trends. Crude oil futures at the New York Mercantile Exchange set a new record closing price of $96.70 on Nov. 6 and a new intra-day record of $98.62 per barrel on Nov. 7. Crude oil values have increased 42 percent since August due to international geopolitical unrest, increased world demand and strong trading in crude oil futures.
The department's Energy Center collects fuel prices from retail providers located throughout Missouri. Published twice a month, the Missouri Energy Bulletin includes information about prices and supplies of transportation and heating fuels.
Bond Secures over $55 Million for Missouri Millitary Projects
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), November 11, 2007 - U.S. Senator Kit Bond has announced that he secured over $55 million for key Missouri military projects in the defense spending bill conference report.
"I have long believed that what happens on the battlefields of Iraq or Afghanistan in part depends on what happens here in Missouri." said Bond. "These funds are critical to not only Missouri businesses and employees who work hard to provide top notch equipment and cutting edge research, but also our troops who put their lives on the line to perform vital national security missions."
Bond secured the federal funds in the fiscal year 2008 Department of Defense spending bill conference report, which passed the House and Senate Thursday evening. The conference report must be signed by the President in order to become law.
Bond secured funds for the following St. Louis area military projects in the defense spending bill conference report:
- $1 million for Stabilized Enzyme Biofuel Cell at Akemin Inc. in St. Louis. The funds will develop a biofuel cell produced from Akemin Inc. of St. Louis that is ideally suited for the power density and duration of unmanned ground sensor systems.
- 1.9 million for All Electric Laser at Nuvonyx in St. Louis. The funds will provide for the correction of critical problems in the reliability of laser diode rays.
- $3.2 million for Hyperspectal Synthetic Aperature Radar at Clean Earth Technologies in St. Louis. The funds will provide for the continued use of a computer/camera system that uses patent pending statistical and pixel based image processing that allows warfighters to operate under variable and adverse lighting conditions often found on the battlefield. The system will provide for better detection and classification of assets, fires, bomb damage, live and dead humans and allies or enemies.
- $2.4 million for High Power Electrolytic Super-Capacitors at Crosslink in St. Louis. The funds will provide for the expedited research, development, and demonstration of high power delivery sources with increased energy delivery capability to power 21st century weaponry.
- $3.5 million for Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing System at Boeing. The funds will provide for a highly accurate cueing system that enables U.S. fighter aircraft pilots to direct weapons against enemy aircraft while performing difficult maneuvers. Under the cueing system, pilots use their heads and eyes to deploy weapons at targets.
U.S. Department of Labor Announces Grant to Assist BRAC-Affected Workers in Missouri
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), November 11, 2007 - The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $1,040,969 grant to the state of Missouri to assist approximately 225 workers affected by the closure of the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) facilities in Kansas City and St. Louis, Mo. The closure is part of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) actions.
"This grant of more than $1 million is to help these Missouri workers transition to new careers and assist the communities affected by the closure of the facilities," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao.
The grant was awarded to the Missouri Division of Workforce Development and will help assist workers and communities affected by these BRAC-related closures.
On June 30, 2005, Missouri received a $1 million grant to begin planning for the closing of the DFAS facilities in Kansas City and St. Louis. With those funds, the state formed the St. Louis Regional BRAC Task Force to provide guidance and direction in identifying areas to target for assistance and for developing strategies to assist affected workers.
