Barack Obama Wins Historic Victory
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), November 4, 2008 - As the polls closed across the United States on Tuesday evening, November 4, newscasters eagerly began reporting the results.
The continuous media coverage of hundreds of thousands of voters waiting long hours in line to cast their votes turned to virtual maps showing states turning blue or red. By all accounts, it was becoming clear that an historic moment was eminent in an election campaign that had lasted nearly two years.
Shortly after 10:00 p.m., CST, the Electoral Votes had given Senator Barack Obama 338 and Senator John McCain 155. The popular vote was 51% for Obama and 47% for McCain, with several states still too close to call, including Missouri and Indiana.
Across the country, the victorious moment was celebrated from Times Square in New York to Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House, to Chicago, where President-Elect Barack Obama walked out on a stage set up in Grant Park. He was greeted with a thunderous cheer from a crowd estimated at well over 125,000.
"This is our moment," stated Obama. "This is our time - to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American Dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth - that out of many we are one; that while we breathe, we hope, and where we are met with cynicism, and doubt, and those who tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of the people: Yes We Can."
The crowd responded enthusiastically with "Yes, we can," waving flags and with tears of joy.

Officials See Sharp Increase in Absentee Ballot Requests from 10 of Missouri's Largest Counties
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), November 2, 2008 - Secretary of State Robin Carnahan announced Friday that local election officials from 10 of Missouri's largest counties have reported a sharp increase in absentee ballot requests.
Although absentee ballots are not tracked statewide before the election, unofficial reports of the requests received show a 40% increase over absentee ballots cast in 2004. The highest increase is in the city of St. Louis, which has received 14,801 absentee ballots compared to a total of 7,408 in 2004. Absentee ballots must be received by the local election authority by 7pm on Election Day to be counted.
"The number of absentee ballot requests and high voter registration levels across the state both point towards record turnout in the upcoming election," said Carnahan. "Having enough, well-trained poll workers is essential for a smooth election when turnout is high. This year, I made $2 million available for additional poll workers this year to serve alongside the 20,000 Missourians who take a day out of their lives to run our elections."
Voters should prepare for high turnout by planning a time to vote on Election Day. Polls will be open from 6am to 7pm, and anyone in line at 7pm will be allowed to vote. On www.GoVoteMissouri.com, voters can learn what identification to bring, find the address of their polling place, and view a sample ballot.
Although the deadline to request an absentee ballot by mail has passed, voters may still vote absentee in person at their local election headquarters through Monday. To vote absentee in Missouri, a registered voter must expect to be prevented from going to their polling place on Election Day.
Acceptable reasons include absence from their jurisdiction, illness or physical disability, religious belief or practice. For a complete list of acceptable reasons and more information on voting absentee, voters may visit www.GoVoteMissouri.com.
