Lewis and Clark Discovery Initiative Provides $335 Million for Higher Education
ST. LOUIS, MO (SLFP.com), September 16, 2007 - Gov. Matt Blunt's Lewis and Clark Discovery Initiative has received $230 million on behalf of college and university students whose schools will see the benefit of the largest statewide investment in classrooms and buildings in recent history. The $230 million is the first installment of the $335 million that Gov. Blunts initiative secured for Missouri students and classrooms.
"This is truly an exciting day for students, colleges and universities," Blunt said. "The Lewis and Clark Discovery Initiative provides $335 million in additional funding for Missouri students and classrooms, and the investments we are making today will secure Missouri's role as a higher education leader as well as benefit Missouri students for generations to come."
The governor's landmark Lewis and Clark Discovery Initiative is a partnership between the Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority and the state. The partnership, authorized through legislation and supported by lawmakers, reinvests a state asset to generate $335 million to strengthen Missouri's colleges and universities for students.
The first portion of the funding, $230 million, was transferred to the state today. The historic initiative takes an enormous stride forward for higher education in our state and provides much needed funding for state-of-the-art learning and research centers. The new learning centers will prepare students to compete in today's global economy where higher quality learning in areas such as math and science are crucial elements for students' future success.
The Department of Higher Education and the Office of Administration will now work with universities and colleges to process the funding. Funding will be distributed to universities and colleges based on qualified expenses beginning in October.
St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank To Conduct Search for New President
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), September 16, 2007 - The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis has announced that it is beginning the search for a successor to President and CEO William Poole, who will retire from that position in March 2008. Federal Reserve System policy requires a president who begins service after the age of 55, to retire upon reaching 10 years of service. Poole, 70, assumed the presidency in March 1998.
Irl F. Engelhardt, Chairman of the St. Louis Fed's Board of Directors, will head a search committee to identify candidates to succeed Poole.
"For many years, the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank has played a noteworthy role in the formulation of U.S. monetary policy," Engelhardt said. "Our goal is to select a president who will maintain that tradition and help the St. Louis Bank play an important role in the Federal Reserve System as it adapts to a changing operating environment."
With branches in Little Rock, Louisville and Memphis, the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis serves the Eighth Federal Reserve District, which includes all of Arkansas, eastern Missouri, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, western Kentucky, western Tennessee and northern Mississippi. The St. Louis Fed is one of 12 regional Reserve banks that, along with the Board of Governors in Washington, D.C., comprise the Federal Reserve System. As the nation's central bank, the Federal Reserve System formulates U.S. monetary policy, regulates state-chartered member banks and bank holding companies, and provides payment services to financial institutions and the U.S. government.
Lambert Welcomes Great Lakes Airlines
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), September 16, 2007 - Lambert-St. Louis International Airport has announced that Great Lakes Airlines will begin flights next month between St. Louis and two regional destinations.
Tickets are now on sale for flights beginning Oct. 7, 2007 from Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and Burlington, Iowa. These are two communities which lost service to Lambert after a previous carrier ceased operations in March.
Great Lakes Airlines will begin serving the two markets through an Essential Air Service contract that allows them to serve several other communities in the region in the near future.
"We look forward to working with Great Lakes Airlines and serving those small markets that need service," said Richard Hrabko, Director of Lambert-St. Louis International Airport.
Great Lakes Airlines provides 200 weekday flights in nine states through three major hubs: Denver, Albuquerque and Phoenix Sky Harbor.
