Political Campaign Signs Political Campaign Signs Support Party Messages
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), September 1, 2008 - Campaign signs are beginning to make an appearance across the St. Louis region in support of the presidential campaign and the upcoming vice presidential debate, scheduled, October 2, at Washington University.

This is the fifth consecutive time the University has been selected by the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) to host a debate. Washington University is the only institution to host more than two debates.

The debate will focus on both domestic and foreign policy and will be administered by a single moderator. Gwen Ifill, a longtime correspondent and moderator for nationally televised public broadcasting news programs, has been selected to moderate the vice presidential debate.

The University is again offering the same facilities that were made available for the 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004 debates, which include the Field House, Francis Gymnasium and other areas of the Athletic Complex. Francis Gym and Francis Field were the sites of the 1904 World Olympic Games, the first Olympics played in the Western Hemisphere.

In 2000, the University hosted a "town-hall meeting" debate between Texas Gov. George W. Bush and Vice President Al Gore, during which candidates took questions from an audience of 140 undecided St. Louis-area voters selected by the Gallup organization.

The town-hall format again was used when President George W. Bush squared off against Sen. John Kerry during the 2004 debate at Washington University. ABC News' Charles Gibson served as moderator.

All tickets to attend the debate are assigned by the CPD. As was done in 1992, 2000 and 2004, any debate tickets that may be assigned to Washington University will be distributed only to full-time students, who will be selected in a University-wide lottery.

Missouri's National Guard Expands Support in Louisiana
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), September 1, 2008 - Gov. Matt Blunt has mobilized an additional 700 Missouri National Guard Citizen-Soldiers to support Hurricane Gustav recovery efforts in Louisiana, bringing the total number of mobilized Missouri Guard members in this effort to nearly 1,300.

"As our Gulf neighbors continue to battle Hurricane Gustav, I am directing an additional 700 Missouri Guard Members to Louisiana," Gov. Blunt said. "I had the opportunity last night to talk to Governor Jindal and we discussed Missouri's Guard presence in Louisiana. I told him that Missourians are proud of the leadership he has shown in helping the people of his state battle the hurricane. Melanie and I offer our thoughts and prayers to the people of the Gulf Coast and I know the thoughts and prayers of Missourians are with our neighbors to the South during this challenging time."

Missouri National Guard units being mobilized today for movement to Louisiana tomorrow include: 203rd Engineer Battalion and Forward Support Company, Joplin; 1141st Engineer Company, Kansas City; 294th Engineer Company, Carthage and Anderson; 220th Engineer Company, Festus; 880th Haul Team, Perryville; 311th Brigade Support Battalion, Lexington and the 548th Transportation Company, Trenton.

"As the needs of Louisiana increase, the Missouri National Guard continues to provide support," said Maj. Gen. King Sidwell, adjutant general for the Missouri National Guard.

These Soldiers will join almost 600 Missouri National Guard members in support of hurricane response efforts in Louisiana, including a task force of military police from across the state, led by the 205th Military Police Battalion, Poplar Bluff; an aviation maintenance team from Springfield; the 7th Civil Support Team, located at Fort Leonard Wood; the 1221st Transportation Company in Dexter, Portageville and Sikeston; and Company A, 311th Brigade Support Battalion in Nevada and Lamar.

The Missouri National Guard Citizen-Soldiers are being mobilized under the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, an interstate mutual aid agreement.

Missouri Readies Shelters for Thousands of Louisiana Citizens Displaced by Hurricane Gustav
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), August 31, 2008 - Gov. Matt Blunt has announced seven shelter locations have been set up to accommodate Hurricane Gustav evacuees from Louisiana. On Saturday, Missouri entered into an agreement with Louisiana to shelter several thousand Louisiana citizens that Louisiana would air evacuate to Missouri. Those air evacuations are set to begin Sunday afternoon.

In a statement, Gov. Blunt said, "I applaud the Missouri communities who stepped up to the plate to operate shelters for our neighbors in Louisiana. These local governments and volunteer organizations demonstrate how compassionate and prepared Missourians are to help our fellow citizens during their time of need."

The Missouri Department of Social Services, the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, Convoy of Hope and Southern Baptists will manage the sheltering, feeding and bulk distribution operations in the Kansas City area, the St Joseph area, the Springfield/Southwest Missouri area, the Jefferson City area, the Cape Girardeau/Southeast Missouri area, the St Louis area, and the Hannibal/Northeast Missouri area.

The United Way will direct self evacuees to shelters if they call (800) 427-4626.

On Friday, Louisiana officials asked if Missouri would accommodate evacuees. Immediately, the State Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Social Services began working with local emergency management officials, the American Red Cross, and Salvation Army on sheltering operations for the evacuees.

Third Annual Traveling Missouri Adoption Heart Gallery Opens in St. Louis
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), August 31, 2008 - The third annual Missouri Adoption Heart Gallery opens at 3 p.m. September 2, 2008 in St. Louis at St. Anthony's Medical Center.

The gallery will be on display through the end of October at nine locations throughout the St. Louis metro area. The Heart Gallery is sponsored by the Missouri Department of Social Services' Children's Division (CD) and the Adoption Exchange - Missouri. It features professional photographs of Missouri foster children awaiting adoption. To date, more than 100 Missouri children have been placed in adoptive homes because of the Heart Gallery.

"The Heart Gallery showcases the personalities and unique spirits of Missouri foster children to help them find love and support in a permanent home," Gov. Matt Blunt said. "I am pleased we have been able to introduce the gallery and help Missourians learn more about adoption opportunities in the state."

"We are continually looking for new ideas to increase the awareness of the need for foster and adoptive families in our state," said DSS Director Deborah Scott. "The Heart Gallery is a truly amazing way for us to reach out to the citizens of Missouri about the on-going need for loving, supportive, permanent homes for Missouri's foster children."

The 2008 Heart Gallery features 238 children in 185 photos and will be on display in 22 venues in 16 cities across the state. In its first two years the gallery featured more than 330 children in 230 portraits. The photographs are made possible through the generous donation of time and talent of photographers across the state.

"There are so many wonderful Missouri children waiting for a family who will offer them safety, security and love," said Paula Neese, CD Director. "The Heart Gallery personalizes these children and their dreams of becoming a permanent part of a family."

In 2007, 1,200 Missouri foster children were adopted. Nearly 80 of those children were placed with a potential adoptive family as a result of connections made through the Heart Gallery. "These photographs do more than capture the physical appearance of a child. They capture their spirit and desire to belong to a family," said Larry Walker, Board Chairman, Adoption Exchange - Missouri. "Without the support of these photographers, the Heart Gallery would not be possible. They are at the core of its success."

The gallery will be on display in nine locations during its stay in St. Louis metro area. Locations include: St. Anthony's Medical Center, St. Louis Carousel Gallery-Faust Park, Kirkwood YMCA, The Center of Clayton, Edward Jones YMCA, Harris Stowe State University, Blanch M. Touhille Performing Arts Center, St. Louis Children's Hospital and Monsanto Family YMCA.
