Gov. Blunt Addresses Confederation of Employers and Industries of Spain
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), July 20, 2008 - On Thursday, Gov. Matt Blunt delivered an address at the Invest in Missouri Seminar in Madrid, hosted by the Confederation of Employers and Industries of Spain. The event was part of the governor's trade mission focused on showcasing Missouri's outstanding business opportunities to a world market and expanding international investment in the state.
In his remarks, Gov. Blunt said, "The state of Missouri is committed to ensuring current success and future prosperity, through creating an environment that encourages business and investment, rather than pursuing policies that will stifle it. I am confident that there are numerous opportunities for Spain and Missouri to explore that will further strengthen our respective business and investment atmosphere."
Spain has emerged as an important destination for investment in the international market. Currently, 600 U.S. companies employ nearly 200,000 workers in Spain, while more than 200 Spanish companies now have subsidiaries in the United States. Spain is currently the eleventh largest investor in the U.S.
Gov. Blunt also met with U.S. Ambassador to Spain Eduardo Aguirre, Jr. where he touted the benefits of expanding trade relations with Missouri companies and new economic development opportunities in Missouri.
Gov. Blunt recently signed legislation to support responsible economic development in Missouri and ensure the state remains competitive in the global marketplace.
Gov. Blunt enacted legislation containing several major provisions to build on strong economic growth and development in Missouri. The legislation increases the annual cap on the governor's successful Quality Jobs Tax Credit Program from $40 million to $60 million and among other things increases the amount of tax credits the Missouri Department of Economic Development may authorize for the Enhanced Enterprise Zone Program from $14 million to $24 million.
