ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), Sept 23, 2001 - In breathtaking show of support, actors, musicians, artists and athletes joined together for "America: A Tribute to Heroes," a fundraising effort that was telecast live, Sept 21, to benefit the survivors and the families of those victimized by the terrorist attacks on America. Bruce Springsteen opened the two-hour, commercial-free, simulcast program with "My City In Ruins," a poignant acoustic ballad he wrote to honor the memory of those lost in the September 11 tragedy. Springsteen was followed by Tom Hanks, who offered a reminder to the families of the victims that they are supported by the larger American family. "We are not healers," Hanks said. "We are not protectors of this great nation. We are merely artists, entertainers, here to raise spirits and, we hope, a great deal of money." Other highlights from the broadcast, which united participants on both American coasts as well as in the U.K., included a joint appearance by Will Smith and Muhammad Ali, who denounced the destructive acts of hatred and urged people to stand together; an appeal for kindness, love and unity from Julia Roberts; moving tributes to the courageous and the fallen by Tom Cruise, Jim Carrey, George Clooney, Robin Williams and Chris Rock - who reminded us all that "Heroes don't give up" - and Clint Eastwood, who asserted that "The terrorists who wanted 300 million victims will instead get 300 million heroes." In addition to spoken words of remembrance and inspiration, musicians provided some of the evening's most memorable moments. Following Tom Petty's searing rendition of his defiant anthem "I Won't Back Down" were stirring musical performances from Mariah Carey, Wyclef Jean, Sting, U2, Stevie Wonder, Neil Young and Celine Dion, who delivered an inspired, choir-backed version of "God Bless America," and Willie Nelson, who closed the show with a heartfelt rendition of "America the Beautiful" accompanied by all of the celebrities from the Los Angeles portion of the telecast. WASHINGTON, (PRNewswire), Sept 21, 2001 - In the aftermath of the tragic events of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, President Bush and Congress reached agreement, Sept 21, on a $15 billion emergency economic assistance package to stem the dramatic losses sustained by the nation's airlines. ATA President and CEO Carol Hallett praised the action. "With the safety and security of our passengers and crewmembers as our highest priority, we commend the President and the Congress for taking decisive action to provide economic stabilization to our nation's airlines. Although we understand the difficult decision that confronted many of our elected leaders, we are gratified that our nation's airlines will not become the first economic casualty of this war. Restoring economic stability to our air transport system is essential to moving our nation forward and resuming our way of life." As enacted, the Air Transportation Safety and System Stabilization Act would provide $10 billion in federal loan guarantees and credits, subject to such terms and conditions as the President deems necessary. The bill would also provide $5 billion in compensation for direct losses incurred beginning on September 11, 2001, as a result of the nationwide ground stop, and for the resulting losses that will be incurred through the end of the year. To monitor the disbursement and allocation of these funds and to oversee the loan guarantee program, the Air Transportation Stabilization Board was established, comprising the Transportation Secretary, Treasury Secretary, Federal Reserve Board Chairman, and Comptroller General. Passenger-only airlines and combined passenger/cargo airlines would be eligible to share $4.5 billion of the total $5 billion provision. Cargo-only airlines would be eligible to share the remaining $500 million. An individual air carrier's liability for the events of September 11th is limited to the amount of their insurance. Claimants may sue in Federal Court in the Southern District of New York or apply for relief from a newly-established victims compensation fund. A Special Master, appointed by the Attorney General, will determine compensation for the claimant. However, no punitive damages may be awarded by the Special Master. The legislation would also expand "war risk insurance" coverage to the domestic operations of airlines, expanding it from its current international-only scope, and to the vendors, subcontractors and agents of airlines. Passengers seeking information about flights can go to www.orbits.com for a complete list of phone numbers and web sites for all airlines.
