People Jam New I-64 Before the Traffic
The Jack Buck family admires the new "Jack Buck Memorial Highway" sign unveiled during the Grand Opening Ceremony, Sunday afternoon.

People Jam New I-64 Before the Traffic
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), December 6, 2009 - On Sunday, December 6, MoDOT threw a Grand Celebration with the reopening of the east half of the Interstate 64 project.

From noon to 4 p.m., the road was available for bikes and pedestrians for a once in a lifetime opportunity to walk and run on the road before it officially opened to traffic, before 5 a.m., Monday, December 7.

The official ribbon cutting ceremony was held at 3 p.m. on the westbound lanes of I-64 between Hampton Avenue and the Tamm Avenue bridge. The ceremony featured MoDOT Director Pete Rahn and the members of the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission, the US Federal Highway Administrator Victor Mendez, U.S. Congressman William Lacy Clay, U.S. Congressman Russ Carnahan, State Representative Rachel Storch, St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley, St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay and other elected officials.

Kids on bicycles and razors enjoyed riding on the smooth concrete surface of the new I-64 during the Grand Opening.
Julie Buck, daughter of the late Cardinal baseball announcer Jack Buck, spoke to the audience before the long-anticipated unveiling of the sign that designates I-64, in the St. Louis city limits, as the "Jack Buck Memorial Highway." The Harris Stowe State University Pep Band played the national anthem and the Missouri State Highway Patrol presented the colors.

An early morning 5K run on the Westbound lanes of I-64, west of Tamm overpass to west of Big Bend, drew several thousand participants for an opportunity to pound the new pavement.

MoDOT officials suggest that motorists visit the I-64 web site to watch video drive-thrus of the highway and new interchanges. For example, drivers will find that access to I-64 west from Belleville has changed dramatically to an entrance that takes them along the highway to an intersection at Big Bend which they cross over to enter the highway. Likewise access to Brentwood Boulevard heading north will be a very different experience. Motorists will find the entrances and exits to Forest Park has a very unique design to ease congestion. The $420 million project to rebuild 9 miles of I-64/US40 between Spoede Road and Kingshighway Boulevard began in March 2007. The west section of the project, between Ballas Road and I-170 reopened December 15, 2008. At the reopening ceremonies for the east section of the project between I-170 and Kingshighway, MoDOT officials were pleased to announce that this section also came in under budget and opened three weeks early.
