ST. LOUIS, MO, May 28, 2009 - Crews working for the Mississippi River Bridge project team will close the westbound Interstate 70 ramp to Madison Monday, June 1, from noon to 3 p.m. to conduct geologic studies for retaining walls and other structures for the river bridge, weather permitting. Crews also plan to close the westbound I-70 ramp to Madison Street Tuesday, June 2 through Thursday, June 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. Crews will be taking ground and rock samples to be able to design foundations for retaining walls, as well as structures for lighting, overhead message boards and traffic cameras. This work is part of work on the $640 million Mississippi River Bridge. The new bridge is expected to reduce severe traffic congestion and vehicle crashes on the Poplar Street Bridge (PSB). Currently, PSB carries combined traffic for Interstates 55, 64 and 70. In 2004, traffic counts on the PSB average 120,000 vehicles daily. ST. LOUIS, MO, May 24, 2009 - After nearly 8 months of construction, MODOT crews opened two lanes in each direction on the Hampton Avenue bridge over I-64 following the dedication and ribbon cutting Friday morning, May 22. The old Hampton Avenue bridge was closed Monday, September 22. The Hampton Avenue and Wells Drive intersection at the north end of the bridge has been rebuilt as a roundabout and also opened Friday. A new pedestrian underpass was opened in April so pedestrians on the Forest Park trail could pass under Hampton instead of crossing traffic at Hampton and Wells. "We are thrilled to be opening the new Hampton bridge on schedule and just in time for the busy summer season in the park," said I-64 Project Director Lesley Hoffarth. "We worked very closed with Forest Park Forever and the St. Louis City Parks Department on the design of the improvements, especially at the Hampton and Wells intersection. The new design will work much better for both traffic and pedestrians." While I-64 remains closed until the end of the year, motorists can continue using all of the entrances to Forest Park including the newly opened Hampton Avenue bridge. Throughout the ongoing I-64 construction, access is being maintained to all the area businesses along Oakland and Hampton avenues. Motorists driving northbound on Hampton crossing over I-64 need to be aware that at the Hampton and Wells intersection, the right lane will be a right turn only lane. The left lane will go into the roundabout and drivers can drive around the intersection to turn onto Concourse or Wells. MoDOT Reveals Top 10 Work Zones To Look Out For ST. LOUIS, MO, May 24, 2009 - Just like Late Night With David Letterman, the Missouri Department of Transportation has come up with a top 10 list of its own: the top 10 work zones most likely to cause traffic delays this travel season. "Once Memorial Day hits and the kids are out of school, people take to the roads for summer travel and we take to them to make them better," said MoDOT Director Pete Rahn. "Improving our roads always causes some growing pains, but we do our best to minimize the impact." The list of the state's top 10 work zones to look out for is ranked in order of impact based on traffic volume, amount of work and level of delay. A clickable map showing the top 10 work zones, along with a printable version of the map and project information, can be found at http://www.modot.org/. In addition to the top 10 work zones, 32 bridges throughout the state are closed as part of the department's Safe & Sound Bridge Improvement Program, with construction starting on more bridges virtually every week throughout the summer. Under the program, 802 of the state's worst bridges will be fixed in five years. Motorists can find out how the bridge work might impact their travel by visiting www.modot.org/safeandsound. "We want to help you prepare for what's ahead when you travel," Rahn said. "These are the projects most likely to slow you down, so avoid them if you can, especially during peak hours." Most work zones will not be active over the Memorial Day weekend, but it may be necessary for lane closures to remain in place. For more information on these or other projects around the state, call 888-ASK-MoDOT. 1. St. Louis- Interstate 64 from Kingshighway to I-170. All lanes of I-64 and several interchanges are closed for reconstruction work. Work will be around the clock, and includes work on interchanges and overpasses through late 2009. Drivers are encouraged to use I-70 and I-44 as alternate routes. Construction that significantly impacts cross traffic includes the Hampton Bridge and ramps closed until July 2009 and the Hanley Bridge and I-64 ramps closed until late 2009. Kansas City - kcICON: Interstate 29/35 reconstruction. Interstate 29/35 from Route 210/Armour Road to the northeast corner of the downtown Kansas City central business district loop will have restricted lanes and various ramp closures through 2011. The route carries 102,000 vehicles per day. Two restricted lanes open daily 6-8:30 a.m. and 3:30-6:30 p.m. Delays expected during both peak and non-peak hours. Springfield - Route 60/65 interchange reconstruction in Springfield. This project involves building two "flyover" ramps and new bridges over the railroad tracks, Lake Springfield and Route 60 on Route 65. The work will involve nighttime road closings, lane closings and traffic shifts that will create delays. The project, which will be completed in October 2012, is expected to impact more than 125,000 drivers a day. 4. Kansas City - Route 71. Construction of a new interchange at 187th Street in Belton/Raymore (periodic lane closures); reconstruction of the 163rd Street interchange in Belton (narrowed two lanes, speed limit 45 mph and periodic lane closures through early July, then southbound restrictions to mid-August); reconstruction of the Route 150 interchange (restricted to two lanes in each direction and ramp closures through the end of 2009). Route 71 expected to be congested from 140th Street in Grandview to just north of Route J in Peculiar through the end of the year. 5. St. Louis - Interstate 55 from 4500 South Broadway to Lindbergh. This project will replace the Union bridges, rehabilitate the Holly Hills and Delor bridges and upgrade the Bowen pedestrian bridge to be compatible with Americans with Disabilities Act requirements. Construction work begins in fall 2009 and will impact more than 139,000 drivers daily. Union bridges will be closed in spring 2010. 6. Cooper County- Interstate 70, from Route B (mile marker 103) near Boonville to the Saline County line. Westbound lanes will be resurfaced beginning in the summer months and ending in fall 2009. The project route carries 28,000 vehicles a day. Motorists should expect lane closures and possible delays during daytime and night hours when work is taking place. 7. Springfield - Route 13/I-44 Diverging Diamond Interchange in Springfield. This project will convert the existing interchange to a "diverging diamond" interchange with traffic criss-crossing at the traffic signals on either end of the Route 13 interchange over I-44. The Route 13 bridge deck will also be repaired. Drivers should expect traffic shifts and lane closings at night that will cause daily traffic delays. Route 13 over I-44 will be closed for an entire weekend before opening to the diverging diamond configuration. The project is scheduled to be completed July 10, 2009. The project route carries 90,000 vehicles a day. 8. Pemiscot County - Interstate 55. The project includes resurfacing the northbound lanes from the Arkansas state line to north of Route U. The Route 84 northbound off-ramp pavement will also be replaced. During work, northbound and southbound traffic will be shifted to use the southbound lanes only. Work is expected to begin in July. I-55 in Pemiscot County carries approximately 19,200 vehicles a day, depending on the location. Completion is expected by fall 2010. 9. Resurfacing Route 65 from Route 36 to I-70. Resurfacing nearly 73 miles across three counties of Route 65 from Route 36 to I-70. This Better Roads, Brighter Future Project includes centerline and edgeline rumble strips. The project also includes ramps at the Route 65 and I-70 interchange. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in the work zone areas. To rehabilitate the Blackwater River Bridge south of Marshall in Saline County, northbound traffic has been shifted to the southbound lanes, reducing traffic to one lane in both directions. Route 65 carries more than 10,000 vehicles per day depending on the location. Moderate delays can be expected. The work will be completed early this fall. 10. Pulaski County - I-44 eastbound lane from Route 17 to one mile west of Route 28. This project consists of three miles of surface milling and grinding to remove excess material from cracks and joints in the pavement. Six miles of overlay will then be added to the surface. I-44 will be restricted to one lane of traffic in the eastbound direction. Motorists should expect morning and afternoon rush-hour congestion. The project will start this summer and take about three months to complete. The route carries approximately 16,000 vehicles per day.
