by Betty Magrath, SLFP.com ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com) Feb 7, 2002 - The Gateway Guide Program, a high-tech program designed to improve traffic flow, was launched today by the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) and co-presenters Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), Bi-State Development Agency, and the East-West Gateway Coordinating Council. The program, utilizing the latest in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technology, will operated from the Gateway Guide Transportation Center (TIC), 14301 South Outer 40 Road in Chesterfield, MO. "What we are trying to do is put together a system for total traffic management in the St. Louis Metropolitan region," stated Ed Hassinger, MoDOT District Engineer, St. Louis Region, following the press conference. "The idea is to make travel safer and more efficient and to get people better information so they make decisions about their travel. As the system matures, we will actually manage traffic through ramp metering," commented Hassinger. "Eventually there will be three major sources of information, the big message boards that you see on the highway will give you information if you are already on the highway in a traffic situation," noted Hassinger. Later this year, the web site will be available with real-time traffic information and speed through images that will refresh every two minutes or so. "It's a reality that we can't build our way out of congestion," stated Hassinger. Eventually, the plan is to have live video and traffic speeds on the Interstates indicated in various colors. Still a year out is real-time phone system that commuters will be able to dial in 511 and receive traffic reports that are customized to the route that they are taking.
"We are taking advantage of the technology that has developed. However, good management is just the right thing to do for the community," stated Dinkheller. Beginning Thursday, February 7, commuters will see traffic messages on a message board on eastbound I-70 in Earth City and another near the interchange of I-70 and Route 370. The remaining 11 message boards in Missouri are all scheduled to come on line from February through June of this year. Three more dynamic message boards are scheduled to be in use in Illinois by July 2002. IDOT will input messages on their boards from their operations center in Collinsville, IL. The Gateway Guide program is a joint venture funded with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. Hassinger stated that between MoDOT and IDOT, over $45 million has been spent to build the Transportation Information Center, design and install the first ITS components, hardware, software, staff to operate the system, Motorist Assist.
