International Folkfest Celebrates Ethnic Heritages
by Betty Magrath, SLFP.com photos by Bob Moore, SLFP.com ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), Oct 13, 2001 - Colorful ethnic costumes, musical sounds and folk rhythms, lively dance performances, a world bazaar and a variety of ethnic foods provided a cultural window into the diverse lives of many St. Louisans for the International Folkfest, Oct 12 - 14, at the Greensfelder Recreation Complex, located in Queeny Park. On Saturday afternoon, families, friends and representatives from many cultures filled the complex for the event. Guests enjoyed tasting samples of cooking from nearly twenty food booths. The tantalizing aroma filled the air upon entering the complex. The sound of children laughing and playing games could barely be heard over the pleasant bantering of vendors selling their arts and crafts in the World Bazaar section. Young dancers enthusiastically performed folk dances on the Forum stage for the audience. Many groups were accompanied by musicians playing intricate rhythms for the dancers. The Cabaret stage provided space for dance lessons and an opportunity to play Brazilian instruments. Storytelling, cooking demonstrations and jewelry workshops took place in the Cultural Discovery Room. The event continues through Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with dance performances including the Chinese School, Hawaiian Polynesian Revue, West African, Scottish, Taiwanese, Greek, Korean, Somali, Japanese and Romanian.
