ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), August 20, 2003 - St. Louis Public Schools will host its third annual Back to School Family Festival on Saturday, August 23, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Vashon High School, 3035 Cass Avenue. This event serves as a "one-stop shop" opportunity for families throughout the school district to register students, get children immunized, and obtain information about bus transportation and after-school care. This year's festival will feature refreshments, entertainment, door prizes, vouchers for school supplies, and activities for children. Various community agencies that provide services for children will also have representatives and information at the festival. The district will have translators available to help families that speak Arabic, Bosnian, Farsi, Kurdish, Spanish, Somali and Vietnamese. "The Back to School Family Festival offers a fun and convenient way for families in the district to enroll their children and pick up information and get questions answered to prepare for the start of school," said Everette Carter, the event organizer and project director for the school district's Safe Schools/Healthy Students program. To register a child who has never attended a St. Louis Public School, the parent or guardian needs to bring the following: proof of St. Louis City address, up-to-date immunization records for each child, and a birth certificate for each child. If the student has a new address within the city, proof of the new St. Louis City address is needed. The first day of school for St. Louis Public Schools is Sept. 8, 2003. For more information about the Vashon event, call Carter at (314) 345-4465. For general information about registering a child to attend school or other questions, please call St. Louis Public Schools' parent hotline at (314) 367-1368.
