St. Louis' Newest Charter Elementary School to Open in Carondelet Neighborhood
ST. LOUIS (SLFP.com), August 8, 2010 - St. Louis' newest charter elementary school, Carondelet Leadership Academy (CLA), is set to begin classes August 23, 2010, offering greater convenience for parents.
The school, located at 7604 Michigan Ave. in the historic Carondelet neighborhood in South St. Louis City, will include the popular "Youth In Need: Out of School Program." The before and after school care program gives parents the option - at no cost - to bring students to school as early as 6:30 a.m. and pick them up as late as 6 p.m. CLA is finishing renovations to the former St. Boniface School where it will unveil Chicago-based American Quality Schools' (AQS) first charter school in St. Louis.
"We are absolutely delighted to be partnering with Youth In Need to make a significant difference in the academic progress of our students, as well as provide extra flexibility to accommodate the schedules of working parents," said Patrice Coffin, principal of CLA. Youth In Need staff will be on hand five days a week to help students with homework and provide enrichment activities to stimulate learning.More information is online at www.youthinneed.org.
CLA can serve up to 300 kindergarten through fifth grade students living in South St. Louis during its inaugural 2010-2011 academic year. The school has currently enrolled 200 students with openings still available.Enrollment information is available online at www.stlclacademy.org. To date, CLA has hired 23 faculty and staff.
Located in one of the city's most vibrant neighborhoods, CLA is completing a $1 million renovation program that includes: installing a new heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system; modernizing classrooms to engage students more effectively; replacing windows; installing campus-wide Wi-Fi; and adding an elevator to access every floor.
Beyond the facility renovations, CLA is also building local alliances and partnerships with neighborhood organizations, such as the Carondelet Community Betterment Federation, South Broadway Merchants Association and the Carondelet Family YMCA.
CLA is sponsored by Missouri Baptist University and operated by AQS.Founded in Chicago, Ill. in 1999, AQS is a non-profit, regional education management organization that operates more than one dozen successful charter elementary schools and high schools in the greater Chicago area and northern Indiana. More information is online at www.aqs.org.
