Spanish Story Time at Concordia Publishing House ST. LOUIS (SLFP.com), June 27, 2010 - During the hot summer months, parents are often looking for something fun and educational to do with their children. On July 10, the Concordia Publishing House (CPH) bookstore is the place for parents of Hispanic children to do just that. CPH's multilingual department, Editorial Concordia, is planning a Spanish Story Time for young Hispanic children in the St. Louis area on July 10. Story Time will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and will feature readings of a few of CPH's Spanish books. There will also be a time for crafts and refreshments, plus a small gift will be given to families who attend. "It is our mission to spread the love of Jesus Christ around the globe," said Marcia Wilhelm, Editorial Concordia's Marketing Manager. "Even by reaching people who live next door, this is a great outreach opportunity for us." CPH's Spanish Story Time will feature several Spanish books including El buen samaritano (The Good Samaritan) and Jesus y Zaqueo (Jesus and Zacchaeus) which are part of the Bible Treasures series. The series features simple and important stories from the Bible specifically written for little children age two to six. The Concordia Publishing House bookstore is located at 3558 S. Jefferson Avenue and parking is available on the south side of the building in the visitor's parking lot off of Miami Street. "Everyone is welcome to get out of the sun for a while and attend," said Wilhelm. "We particularly hope that churches who have a Hispanic outreach program (or who know a Spanish speaking family) will encourage those families to come!" Ben Franklin Visits the Magic House ST. LOUIS (SLFP.com), June 27, 2010 - Benjamin Franklin, one of America's favorite Founding Fathers, makes an Independence Day weekend visit to The Magic House when actor Alan J. Prewitt presents A Conversation with Ben. During this electrifying one-man show, Ben will provide witty and provocative insight into the founding of our country and share his many accomplishments as an author, statesman and inventor. This unique historical encounter takes place in the Star-Spangled Center, recently recognized for Outstanding Performance in Citizenship Education by the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign War. The Star-Spangled Center features favorite exhibits including Famous Phrases, You Can Be President Too, Presidential Press Conference, and Sign the Declaration. A Conversation with Ben is part of The Magic House's Visiting Artist Series and performances will take place on July 2-4 and July 10-11 at 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm each day. Seating is available on a first come, first served basis. A special reading of the Declaration of Independence will be held on Sunday, July 4 in honor of Independence Day. On the Fourth of July, the museum will be open special hours from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. For more information, please call (314) 822-8900. Parents Urged to Be Sparkler Smart ST. LOUIS (SLFP.com), June 19, 2010 - Using sparklers on our nation's birthday is as traditional as cookouts and parades. And it is equally safe if a few common sense rules are followed, said Nancy Blogin, President of the National Council on Fireworks Safety. But she notes, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission ("CPSC"), approximately 16% of all consumer fireworks injuries are caused by sparklers burning hands and legs, with the majority of sparkler injuries occurring to young children. These injuries would not have occurred if there had been close adult supervision and if some basic safety steps had been taken. The National Council on Fireworks Safety offers these safety steps for sparklers, in the hopes that sparkler injuries to young children can be greatly reduced. -- Children under the age of 12 should not use sparklers without very close adult supervision. -- Always remain standing while using sparklers. -- Never hold a child in your arms while using sparklers. -- Never hold, or light, more than one sparkler at a time. -- Sparklers and bare feet can be a painful combination. Always wear closed-toe shoes when using sparklers. -- Sparkler wire and stick remain hot long after the flame has gone out. Be sure to drop the spent sparklers directly in a bucket of water. -- Never hand a lighted sparkler to another person. Give them the unlit sparkler and then light it. -- Always stand at least 6 feet from another person while using sparklers. -- Never throw sparklers. -- Show children how to hold sparklers away from their body and at arm's length. -- Teach children not to wave sparklers, especially wooden stick sparklers, or run while holding sparklers. The National Council on Fireworks Safety urges Americans to be Sparkler Smart this Fourth of July in their holiday celebrations. |
