Employees with Severe Disabilities Are Happy and Proud of Their Work
ST. LOUIS (PRNewswire), December 1, 2006 - A total of 76 percent of employees with severe disabilities working under the federally funded Javits-Wagner- O'Day Program are very happy with their jobs and 79 percent are proud of their work, according to a recent survey.
The Javits-Wagner-O'Day Program provides employment opportunities to nearly 47,000 people and is the largest single source of employment in the United States for people who are blind or have other severe disabilities.
This first-ever survey was administered via telephone to more than 500 randomly selected employees with cognitive, physical or other disabling conditions.
The goal of the survey was to find ways to improve the Javits- Wagner-O'Day Program for employees with severe disabilities. The survey was designed to assess Javits-Wagner-O'Day employee satisfaction regarding workplace issues, including earnings, workplace safety, training, and relationships between co-workers.
"Results of the survey have been overwhelmingly positive," said Bob Chamberlin, CEO of NISH, one of the two nonprofit agencies charged with implementing the Javits-Wagner-O'Day Program with a focus on serving people with severe disabilities.
"We believed our employees were happy but this response by far exceeds our expectation. We are always looking to improve and this survey will inform our on-going efforts. But it's good to know that the employees, who are the heart and soul of the Javits-Wagner-O'Day Program, are finding satisfaction with what they do."
In the survey, 99 percent of surveyed employees characterized their jobs as "excellent" or "good." The same percentage said they felt safe at work.
Employee Brian Castner noted, "I have a great job working for ServiceSource at the central mail facility for the Internal Revenue Service. The money I earn on my job has enabled me to get my own place and live independently. I am proud of the work I do and I appreciate the opportunity that the Javits-Wagner-O'Day Program has provided me."
Additional employee findings included the following:
* 92 percent characterized their pay as "excellent" or "good;"
* 81 percent have two or more friends at work;
* 94 percent feel they are given the appropriate resources to complete
their jobs;
* 79 percent are comfortable going to their supervisor with questions or
problems; and
* 77 percent said they received adequate training to complete their job.
Javits-Wagner-O'Day and NISH officials have committed to commissioning future surveys to assess and improve Javits-Wagner-O'Day Program employee satisfaction, ensuring that NISH and its affiliated community rehabilitation programs are providing meaningful and supportive employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
