Survey Highlights Mothers as Ideal Workplace Leaders
ST. LOUIS, (BUSINESS WIRE) May 1, 2005 - WorldWIT(TM), the world's largest online community for professional women, recently surveyed its 40,000 members, asking, "Do Mothers Lead Best?" in conjunction with the publication of Mother Leads Best, a new book by Moe Grzelakowski. Only two percent of respondents said they'd rather work for a non-mother. Sixty-nine percent attributed mothers with having 'greater patience' than non-mothers, followed by 'better listening skills' and 'higher efficiency'. The survey also found that respondents were far more likely to work with mothers in management (81%) than non-mothers.
WorldWIT CEO, former Fortune 500 executive, nationally known workplace expert and mother of five small children, Liz Ryan quiped, "These results square perfectly with the experiences I've had working with the global WorldWIT community, in my 25 years in Corporate America and in my 12 years of motherhood."
Liz added, "These findings validate the instinct of so many working moms who have received the message that there is no place for them in business leadership because of their family obligations. The fact is that motherhood and a career can not only co-exist but can mutually reinforce one another." Liz concludes, "There is nothing like parenthood to force you into the wonderful habits of brutal prioritization focusing on the positive and learning not to sweat the small stuff."
While it's no mystery that motherhood is a deeply transforming experience, what is not so obvious is the huge impact it has on top businesswomen. Grzelakowski, entrepreneur, Senior Advisor at Investor Growth Capitol and author of Mother Leads Best, added, "When I interviewed 50 of America's top mothers in companies such as DuPont, IBM, Lucent, Marriott, McDonald's, PepsiCo, Procter & Gamble, Visa, and Xerox I found that all 50 believed that raising children transformed their leadership style. Parenthood changed what they valued, how they worked, and how they viewed the world."
She stated, "The decision to pursue both career and family is not right for everyone. But for those of you that desire both, don't overlook the positive impact that raising a family has on your career, and be wary of the myth that foregoing a family will advance your career."
Grzelakowski concluded, "For those of you who know great mother leaders, they are the busiest and humblest people in the business world. Along with WorldWIT, we salute them this Mother's Day."
