Package Yourself to Get Your Dream Job
ST. LOUIS (PRNewswire), January 28, 2007 - Want to land the job of your dreams? Imagine you own a company. Your company sells only one product -- yourself.
It's a whole new way of looking at the job search process, says Roy J. Blitzer, an executive coach and management consultant who created the Hire Me, Inc. concept. He lays out this entrepreneurial job search strategy from resume and cover letter to interview and salary negotiations in his books, Hire Me, Inc. and Hire Me, Inc. Interviews.
Start with a competitive analysis. Examine your strengths and weaknesses. Compare yourself to the competition -- others who want the job -- and determine ways to set yourself apart.
Move on to creating marketing materials -- your resume, cover letter and business cards. These must stand out and present the product -- yourself -- in the best light. Just like a brochure for a new product, your materials should attract positive attention, present information about the product, explain the product's benefits, and give some price, use and value facts.
Now it's time for product roll out -- putting yourself into the marketplace. Respond to job ads in the newspaper and online, collaborate with recruiters and employment agencies, and attend networking events. Prepare a 30 to 60 second elevator speech to describe the product, its use how it helps them (in other words, what type of job you're looking for and how your unique traits will benefit a company).
Approach a job interview like a sales pitch. Identify the company's needs, and tailor your questions and answers to address them. Impress the interviewer with savvy questions. Show them how you can bring value to their bottom line or help their organization run more efficiently and convince them that you're the best person for the job.
Be smart during salary negotiations. Know what you're worth in advance, and show the company what value you can bring to them. Imagine you're selling them something that will boost their revenues -- how much would they be willing to pay?
By taking this uniquely entrepreneurial approach and applying it to your job search, you can land the ultimate job by pitching yourself as the ultimate product.
