Movie Hopefuls Lineup for Casting Call for 'The Game of Their Lives' by Bob Moore, SLFP.com St. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), May 31, 2003 - Thousands of people arrived at Shaw Elementary School, located on The Hill, early Saturday morning, May 31, for an open call to be an extra in a major feature film, "The Game of Their Lives." Holding photos and information, movie hopefuls waited patiently in several long lines around the school for their turn to participate. Carrie Houk, a St. Louis casting agent in charge of casting extras for "Game," explained the ins and outs of playing "background", or extras, in the film. Frank Borghi, who was the goalkeeper for the 1950 U.S. World Cup soccer team, visited the casting call with his son and grandkids. In an interview with Saint Louis Front Page, Borghi commented about all the activity. "I am so excited about the whole thing. It's really nice because five of the boys were from the St. Louis area," stated Borghi. "If they asked me, I'd be happy to provide technical advise or do anything I can," he laughed. "But they probably know more about it than I do." When asked about Harry Keogh's earlier comments on Borghi's role as the goalkeeper in the stunning victory over the British team, he responded, "Yes, Harry's a good backfield man. He played an excellent game and had good ball control." Borghi, who was born on Marconi, still resides in St. Louis and operates the Calcaterra Funeral Home on The Hill. In a phone interview with Saint Louis Front Page following the casting call, Houk spoke enthusiastically about the event. "The casting call ran so smoothly and the crowd was just lovely. Everyone was just such good sports about the wait. After awhile the lines were not so long." She commented that one family arrived at midnight to wait all night long for their opportunity. "Somehow, I just have to get them in the movie," she stated. Although nearly 7,500 people participated, Houk said they will begin calling people this week. "We sorted applications by age group and height at the school. Now, the job begins to cut all the men's hair and measure everyone for their outfits." "Game" will begin five weeks of filming this June and July at St. Louis-area locations. The film reunites director David Anspaugh and screenwriter Angelo Pizzo, who teamed previously on the hit films Hoosiers and Rudy. Actors Gerard Butler will portray Borghi and Wes Bentley will portray another U.S. team member, Walter Bahr. See archived feature story, 'The Game of Their Lives' to Be Filmed in St. Louis.
