Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Brings Thousands to Downtown St. Louis for the 10th Annual Event

ST. LOUIS (SLFP.com), June 21, 2008 - Bright blue skies and summer breezes welcomed over 62,000 participants for the 2008 Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure© in downtown St. Louis.
Families, friends and visitors, wearing official race t-shirts or corporate team t-shirts, began arriving around the Soldier's Memorial early Saturday morning. The excitement built with each activity, culminating with the long anticipated 5K run at 8:45 a.m., quickly followed by the 5K walkers. Laughing and chatting energetically, the fun walkers filled the area streets for the start of the main event, at 9:15.
This year, there were over 1,000 teams, with 10 sponsored by large corporations including Anheuser Busch, Boeing, Wachovia Securities, Siteman Cancer Center, Citi-St. Louis, Express Scripts, Bryan Cave, St. Louis Blues/FSN Midwest, Team Breadhead WIL 92.3 and Celebrating Life with Rose. The anticipated goal of raising $3 million was surpased with generous donations from individuals.
As hundreds of participants began moving west along Olive Street from 16th Street to N Compton, hundreds were still lining up to begin their part. Coming and going, it was an overwhelming show of support for the fundraising efforts of the Komen Race organizers.
Up to seventy-five percent of the net money raised by the Komen St. Louis Affiliate stays in the St. Louis area to fund education, screening, treatment and support programs. A minimum of twenty-five percent of the funds support the Komen Award and Research Grant Program. Tax-deductible donations and matching gifts can still be made on-line at www.komenstlouis.org
