ST. LOUIS (SLFP.com), June 10, 2008 - Last summer the St. Louis region worked feverishly to help families and loved ones avoid heat-related deaths and illnesses.
Based on last year's efforts and those unbelievable demands, Cool Down St. Louis, a regional, all-volunteer, non-utility, education and energy assistance cooling charity, is spearheading an early effort to keep area seniors, the disabled and small sick infants in needy households, safe.
Through the "Check On Your Neighbors" program, Cool Down St. Louis is leading a battle with about 14 partnering social service agencies, along with public officials to save lives in 17 Missouri and Illinois counties, including the City of St. Louis.
With temperatures climbing into the 90s this week, regional officials and area social service partners of Cool Down St. Louis met Tuesday morning at AmerenUE headquarters in downtown St. Louis to kickoff the summer program.
"Ameren has given away air-conditioners for the past five years," stated Richard Mark, Senior VP/Missouri Delivery-AmerenUE, before helping load air-conditioners on a truck for distribution. "However, last year was the first year we partnered with Cool Down St. Louis to give away 50 air-conditioners. That partnership went so well that this year we expanded that program to 100 air-conditioners," stated Mark.
AmerenUE is also funding a $50,000 program with Cool Down St. Louis. "The program will provide education and advocacy to seniors citizens and disabled about things they can do in their home to lower their costs of energy usage and how they can better keep their homes cool to protect their health during these hot summer days," stated Mark.
