Christmas Comes Early for Gene Slay's Boys' Club Youngsters
by Bob Moore, SLFP.com
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), December 21, 2009 - For nearly 80 years, children have participated in sporting, social and education activities at the Gene Slay's Boys' Club, located at 2524 South 11th Street in South St. Louis. The club serves some 6,500 young boys, between the ages of 6 to 18, every year from its facility in the Soulard neighborhood.
This year, the youngsters received over 75 toys donated by the customers of Dave Mungenast St. Louis Acura. Brandy Wise, who organized the special Christmas toy drive for Dave Mungenast St. Louis Acura, explained how the campaign was created.
"It was just an idea to do a toy drive and the boy's club was one that Mr. Mungenast was involved in. So I thought we could benefit this club because the toys would stay here in St. Louis," said Wise, whose husband Thomas serves as financial advisor for the club. "It breaks my heart that a kid wouldn't have a toy for Christmas," she said.
Eugene P. (Gene) Slay, President and CEO of Gene Slay's Boys' Club, joined Ray Mungenast, President of Dave Mungenast St. Louis Acura, Ron Ribolzi, General Manager, and the honorable , Monday afternoon, December 21, to hand out presents to boys at the club. Mungenast and Simon are former members of the club and currently serve on its board of directors.
Wise said that Mungenast offered a 10% discount on services or $250 on a new or pre-owned vehicle in exchange for toys donated by customers. The campaign was the first for the Mungenast dealership on Manchester Road. Next year, the Dave Mungenast Automotive family plans to expand the toy collection program to all six dealerships throughout the St. Louis area.
Anheuser-Busch Employees Donate $225,000 to Three Local Charities
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), December 21, 2009 - Anheuser-Busch employees are once again getting into the spirit this holiday season by donating a total of $225,000 to three charities; the Make-A-Wish Foundation, 100 Neediest Cases and Toys for Tots.
Each organization will receive $75,000 to help support programs they provide to assist children and families across our community during the holiday season.
"One of the great attributes of our employees is their willingness to give back to the community with not only their financial support, but by investing their time and talents in numerous organizations and programs that help thousands throughout the community," said Jim Brickey, vice president of People for Anheuser-Busch, Inc. "These donations are just another example of how our company and our employees help the less fortunate and provide support to those in need."
"This contribution will help make thousands of area children's holiday extra special," said Lt. Col. T. Shane Tomko of the U.S. Marines Corps' Toys for Tots program. "Because of Anheuser-Busch's employees and the generosity of so many throughout the community, we are expecting a banner year for donations and the support we can provide the children of the St. Louis area."
The funds were raised through the internal sale of obsolete office equipment to Anheuser-Busch employees.
St. Louis Receives Award for Municipal Excellence from the National League of Cities
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), December 20, 2009 - The City of St. Louis is one of eight cities selected to receive the Award for Municipal Excellence at the National League of Cities' (NLC) 2009 Congress of Cities & Exposition in San Antonio, Texas.
This year marks the 20th Anniversary of this prestigious award. As a Silver winner in the 150,001-500,000 population category, St. Louis is being honored for the St. Louis Alliance for Homeownership Preservation.
The St. Louis Alliance for Homeownership Preservation is a collaboration of five local agencies that was formed at the request of Mayor Slay in response to increased foreclosures in the City. It provides initial homeowner screening, budget preparation, financial literacy courses, intervention/negotiations with lenders to restructure/refinance existing mortgages and case management to homeowners at risk of going into foreclosure. The project is administered and funded by the City's Affordable Housing Commission.
"The work of the St. Louis Alliance for Homeownership Preservation has meant a great deal to both our citizens and the City of St. Louis," said Francis G. Slay, Mayor of St. Louis. "Working in partnership with the City, the Alliance has helped more than 800 families save their homes from foreclosure through counseling, intervention, and financial support since the project's inception in March of 2008. This means that our neighborhoods are more stable, more of our families have remained intact, and these homeowners have preserved their dignity."
As a Silver winner, St. Louis will receive an award of $1,000, which will be donated to the community non-profit organization of its choice.
Other award-winning cities include Slidell, La.; Savannah, Ga.; Long Beach, Calif.; New York City; Estes Park, Co.; Burnsville, Minn.; and Seattle, Wash.
H1N1 Flu Vaccine Now Available to Everyone
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), December 13, 2009 - With shipments of the H1N1 flu vaccine arriving daily, Missouri state health officials are encouraging local health departments to begin offering the vaccine to anyone who requests it.
The new policy will make the vaccine available for the first time to seniors and other healthy adults. Until now, limited supplies of the vaccine forced local health departments to restrict the vaccine to groups that were hardest hit by the new flu strain, including infants, children and pregnant women.
Margaret Donnelly, director of the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, said health officials would continue their efforts to vaccinate more pregnant women and young people. But increasing supplies of vaccine throughout Missouri now make it prudent to offer the vaccine to other groups as well.
"With 1.26 million doses of vaccine shipped to Missouri, we know that the people most at risk have had the opportunity to be vaccinated and many are now protected from the effects of the H1N1 flu," Donnelly said. "The success of this targeted vaccination effort is now allowing us to extend the distribution of the vaccine to the general population."
"We appreciate the patience shown by seniors and other adults that allowed us to get the vaccine to the people who needed the protection the most," Donnelly said. "Seniors make up less than 1 percent of the flu cases reported so far this year and we would like to keep that record intact. So now is the time for everyone to set up a time to get vaccinated against this very contagious flu bug."
Because the situation can vary across the state, each local health department will decide whether to make the vaccine available to anyone. Some local health departments might continue emphasizing vaccine for young people and adults with chronic health problems if not enough of those groups have been vaccinated in that particular county.
Therefore, Missouri residents should call their local health department to find out about eligibility or to check when a vaccination clinic will be held.
No public clinics scheduled at this time in the St. Louis region. Local health departments provide the H1N1 flu vaccine for free. Private providers may charge a fee for administering the vaccine.
