ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), December 8, 2009 - On December 8, 9, and 10, citizens of the West County area will have an opportunity to hear the latest information about the Manchester Road Great Streets at one of several Visioning Sessions.

East-West Gateway Council of Governments and the consultant team will review the input gathered from the first series of Visioning Sessions that took place in November. "Hope Is Moving In" Program Opens at Clay Elementary School

ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), November 25, 2009 - "This is a new initiative partnership with the St. Louis Public School District, the Homeless Continuum of Care and the City of St. Louis Human Services Department," stated St. Louis Mayor Francis G. Slay, prior to a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Clay Elementary School, located at 3820 M 14th Street.

The school is the fourth "Hope Is Moving In" homeless prevention hub opened during November. The other schools include Mullanphy Elementary School, Sigel Elementary School, and Stevens Middle School.

The City of St. Louis received three-year stimulus funding of $8.4 million to develop programs to prevent homelessness and to assist homeless people in securing housing. Services available include financial assistance through rental/utility deposits and payments, moving costs, relocation and stabilization help through case management, housing placement, legal services, and credit repair.

The Mayor said that putting the hubs close to families needing assistance was an important part of the program. "We thought that we could use the school facilities because they are right in the neighborhoods and it allows us to reach as many people as we can who are at risk of loosing their homes in this tough economy," he stated.

"Programs like this help people that may have trouble paying their mortgages or paying their bills," the Mayor explained, adding that money assistance is also available to help with rental payments.

Bill Siedhoff, Human Services Director, said that the program does not override the City's Horizon Club, a safe haven for homeless. "This is actually new money. It's stimulus funding through HUD's Homelessness Prevention & Rapid Re-Housing Program (HPRP) that has two elements: one is prevention of homelessness and the second is to house individuals that are already homeless."

Siedhoff said they have three years to spend the funding, with 60% within a two year period. "It's really going to provide a shot in the arm for homeless people here in the City of St. Louis," he said.

Roderick Jones, President & CEO of Grace Hill Settlement House, stated that Grace Hill is a human service provider stationed Clay Elementary School that will actually directly work with the families. "We will not only work to get them rapidly rehoused but to bring to bear some of our work training programs and other programs like Head Start to help stabilize them," said Jones.

Jones said that they would interview the families, assess them, and determine how best to help them. "If they are appropriate for the program, we will try to fully understand what challenges they face and to bring together not just financial resources but other resources to help them," stated Jones.

In order to efficiently and orderly process applications, an appointment must be made in advance by call 1-877-70-HOPE4 or by going to www.hopeismovingin.com. No walk-ins will be accepted.

People who are already homeless and in need of housing should either go to the Housing Resource Center at 800 N. Tucker or call 314-802-5444.

AmerenUE Helps Police See Crime from a Different Point of View
by Bob Moore, SLFP.com
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), November 22, 2009 - The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department received a used AmerenUE Ford F550 with a 37 foot bucket lift, Friday morning, November 20, at the Sublette Station.

Each year, AmerenUE donates a variety of supplies and vehicles to communities across Missouri. These donations are in good working order but are no longer needed by the company.

Richard Mark, Senior VP, Customer Operations for AmerenUE, said that when they learned of the St. Louis Police Department's need, they donated a used truck, valued at nearly $18,000. "I heard from the Chief that they were using ladders to do some of their work. This lift will allow them to get much higher and also it's much safer," said Mark. "They can get in there with the harness on in the bucket. They don't have to worry about the ladder moving or falling on them."

St. Louis Metropolitan Police Chief Dan Isom said that the truck would also help with general maintenance around the police department such as changing lights on parking lots and repairing second-story windows.

"We have several initiatives available in terms of surveilance," stated Chief Isom. "This bucket truck will also enable us to go into a neighborhood and maybe pose as a maintenance worker and conduct surveilance work on numerous activities such as drug activity or a house where they may be fencing stolen property," said the Chief. This marks the second time UE has donated a truck to the department.
