'The Walk' Memorial Honors War Veterans
© 2001 Bob Moore, SLFP.com
O'FALLON, MO, (SLFP.com), Nov 12, 2001 - The Veterans' Memorial Walk, comprised of bronze boots and five monoliths of white granite, was dedicated Sunday to honor war veterans. The memorial is located south of Interstate 70, exit 219, at Veterans Memorial Parkway and Belleau Creek Road.
Late Monday afternoon, area residents who couldn't make the dedication stopped to visit the memorial. Vietnam veteran Bob Osterlowh (top photo), who served in the Air Force from 1960-64 and then in the reserves for 27 years, commented that the memorial was really impressive.
"I never saw much action as I was a flight engineer on 124s and C-130s. I've been all over the world but not where the bullets were really flying." He said that the five rows of 13 pairs of black-painted bronze boots generated a lot of conversation at a commemorative dinner held at the VFW Sunday evening in O'Fallon.
(photo above, L. to R.) Debbie Purvis, Brianna Papley and Sarah Purvis stopped to take a closer look and walk through the boots at the memorial. "We had been watching the construction for the past five months and decided to bring the girls to see the boots," said Debbie. "The boots is what really draws the attention to the different people who served in all the wars."
The five 12' x 5' monoliths, created from white granite (bianco romano) from Italy, stand in a reflection pond. Highly polished stainless steel panels with a 30" bronze insignia represent each of the five branches of the armed forces. Flags with the respected seal are placed behind each monolith. Several benches provide a place for visitors to sit and reflect on the unusual formation of boots placed in a marching position.

Grand Drive Entrance to Forest Park Closes
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com) - The Grand Drive entrance into Forest Park is closed while a nearly $1 million bridge is built as part of the Forest Park Master Plan to develop a new river that will connect the lakes in the park.
A budget of $4 million is estimated for building the stream, extending the dual bike paths and landscaping that will include a beach and bluffs. The Forest Park Master Plan calls for connecting the waterways in the park from Jefferson Lake in the southeast corner all the way to the Cascades in the western end. The plan will simulate the natural layout of the former river system.
"The street closing was scheduled for the fall, after the end of the Muny Opera season and when park attendance is lower than in the summer months," said Daniel Skillman, Park Commissioner. "We suggest that motorists who cut through the park from Hampton Avenue to Lindell Boulevard use Skinker or Kingshighway during this construction period."
Signs have been posted on all streets with will be closed. Detour routes are also marked. Motorists can enter the park at Union Boulevard. The work is scheduled to be completed next summer. Forest Park Map
