ST. LOUIS - (L. to R.) Judy Tucker watches the Veterans Day Parade with her Yorkshire Terrier named Tommy, who is dressed in a Navy outfit. Members of the Army Reserve carry a giant flag as they march along 14th Street past the reviewing stand across from Soldier's Memorial. St. Louis Veteran's Day Observance Committee Honors Popular Local Radio Personality
S. LOUIS, MO (SLFP.com) November 9, 2002 - George Noory of KTRS radio was honored with the 2002 "Bob Hardy" media award during Veteran's Day activities, November 9, at Soldier's Memorial.
In an announcement, the Veteran's Day Observance Committee said that Noory, known as the "Nighthawk", is worthy of public recognition for his insightful radio interviews and recognition of veterans. Noory recenty began hosting the program "Coast to Coast AM", which is nationally syndicated on 515 stations to 14 million listerners nightly.
Bob Hardy was the inspiration for this award. Hardy was a popular local radio personality who served in WWII. His legendary career and personal life were the result of a life-time dedicated to the ideals of excellence, community service, and concern for veterans.
Noory joins such notable past recipients as the last St. Louis Cardinal announcer Jack Buck, Harry Levins of the Post Dispatch, Charles Jaco of KMOX and last year's recipient David Strauss, also of KTRS radio.

Missouri's State
Parks and Historic Sites Are
Free-of-Charge Veteran's Day Weekend
S. LOUIS, MO (SLFP.com) November 3, 2002 - The Missouri Department of Natural Resources invites all visitors to rediscover Missouri's state
parks and historic sites free-of-charge Veterans Day Weekend. On
Saturday, Nov. 9, camping will be free in all state park and historic
site campgrounds. On Sunday, Nov. 10, free tours will be offered at all
Missouri state historic sites during regularly scheduled tour hours.
Last year, the department joined many state and federal
organizations to offer free camping during Veterans Day weekend. The
purpose was to allow Americans the opportunity to seek solace and
inspiration from the nation's parks, monuments and memorials. This year,
to honor all veterans, the department is giving the public the opportunity
to rediscover the serenity of Missouri's state parks and the people and
places that shaped Missouri's past.
The Department of Natural Resources administers 83 state parks and
historic sites throughout Missouri; 40 parks and historic sites have
campgrounds. These range from campgrounds with full-service hookups, such
as Bennett Spring State Park near Lebanon, to basic campgrounds in
wilderness settings, such as Taum Sauk Mountain State Park in Iron County.
All state park camping rules and reservation fees apply during Veterans
Day Weekend.
Historic sites preserve Missouri's history in landmarks such as
covered bridges, gristmills and homes of famous Missourians. While some
historic sites may be toured on your own free-of-charge, others charge
nominal fees for tours. Free tours will be given Nov. 10 at facilities
that recognize famous Missourians, such as Mark Twain Birthplace State
Historic Site in Florida, or that interpret our heritage, such as Felix
Valle House State Historic Site in Ste. Genevieve, or that preserve a
historic landmark, such as the gristmill and covered bridge at Bollinger
Mill State Historic Site.

City Residents Offered Free Firewood
ST. LOUIS, MO (SLFP.com) November 3, 2002 - The St. Louis Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry will offer firewood free to city residents starting Monday, Nov. 4, on the Upper Muny Opera parking lot in Forest Park.
"This is a good opportunity for city residents to get free wood for their fireplaces or stoves," said Acting Forestry Commissioner Greg Hayes.
All wood comes from the removal of dead or damaged trees from the city's streets or parks. Wood will vary in size and species and is offered on a first come, first served basis after 3 p.m. each work day. It will be available as long as the wood supply lasts, usually the first week in March. Due to park restrictions, no commercial vehicles or trailers are permitted. For more information, call the Forestry Division at 613-7200.
