Spotlight on St. Louis Area Neighborhood Activities - Updated November 8, 2009

(L - R) Aldermanic president Lewis Reed, Anna May and Francis R. Slay and St. Louis Mayor Francis G. Slay pose by the new entrance of the Francis R. Slay Park, which was re-christening, Saturday, October 23. For at least forty years, area residents played softball and soccer at the former Arsenal/Ellendale Park, located at the corner Arsenal and McCausland.
Private and park funds will be used to renovate the Francis R. Slay Park with paths, a premier soccer field, water garden, baseball field with dugout and gazebo. At the entrance to the park, a bench will be placed on the path honoring the elder Mr. Slay, who is 82 years old this year.
Francis R. Slay retired this year after more than 40 years in public service, as a former MO state rep, committeeman and recorder of deeds.

Carondelet Park Rec Plex Grand Opening
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), November 8, 2009 - The YMCA of Greater St. Louis has decided to cancel Sneak Peek Week, November 9 - 18, to ensure the safety of guests and staff and ensure a safe environment for construction to be completed as efficiently as possible without interruption.
According to an announcement, the record amount of rainfall in St. Louis during October contributed to the construction delay. The Carondelet Park Rec Plex Grand Opening is still scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 19.
The opening will kick off with a Parade, at 3:00 p.m., from 600 Loughborough following Vermont and Holly Hills Ave to 930 Holly Hills. Following a flag ceremony with Boy Scout Troop 181, YMCA members and staff and the Bayless High School Stampede band and the St. Mary's High School Marching Band lead the way to the Carondelet Park Rec Plex.
3:30 pm: Please join St. Louis Mayor Slay and local dignitary will cut the ribbon at 3:30 p.m., followed by a flag raising and the National Anthem sung by local celebrity, Anita Rosamond.
The doors will open at 4:00 with activities including a celebration of the Great American Smokeout, dance performances and fitness classes. Guests can enjoy a tour of the new facility with trained staff and volunteers. See archived story Carondelet Park Rec Plex to Open in November.
Wohl Rec Center Closes For Renovations
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), November 1, 2009 - Wohl Recreation Center, 1515 North Kingshighway, temporarily has closed so $2.7 million in renovations can be made to the building. It will reopen in early June.
Wohl, operated by the Recreation Division of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry, was built in 1965 and will see a major rehab of the building structure and all its facilities, including the swimming pool area. The roof was replaced this summer.
Most of the programs offered at the center will move to West End Center, 5250 Enright at Union avenues.
Funds for the improvements to Wohl are from a 1/8-cent sales tax passed by voters in November 2006. It provided funds to build two new recreation centers and for improvements to five of the city's existing centers. The center in Carondelet Park is scheduled to open in mid-November and work is underway on the center in O'Fallon Park.
Improvements to Wohl include new sidewalks and stairs, painting of the gym, locker rooms and multi-purpose room and new bleachers will be installed. Both men's and women's locker rooms will be renovated and the floor will be replaced in the multi-purpose room.
The pool room will get new ceilings, doors, paint, ventilation and lighting system. An ADA pool lift will be installed.
"This is an exciting renovation and will make Wohl a new, modern facility," said Evelyn Rice-Peebles, recreation commissioner. For more information, call the Recreation Division at 289-5320.
