Spotlight on St. Louis Area Neighborhood Activities - Updated November 9, 2008
November is Missouri Family Health History Month
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), November 9, 2008 - When families gather this holiday season they can create a legacy that could help them and future generations live longer, healthier lives. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services is urging families to record their personal health information when they get together for the holidays. See Community Health News.
Tweens and Teens Double Use of Diabetes Drugs
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), November 9, 2008 - America's tweens and teens more than doubled their use of type 2 diabetes medications between 2002 and 2005, with girls between 10 and 14 years of age showing a 166 percent increase.
The finding is included in a study of chronic medication use in children ages 5 to 19 released today in the journal Pediatrics by researchers from the Saint Louis University School of Medicine, pharmacy benefit manager Express Scripts (NASDAQ:ESRX) and the Kansas Health Institute. See Community Health News.
Plans for Neighborhood Stabilization Program Announced
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), November 9, 2008 - The Missouri Department of Economic Development (DED) has announced the first step in a program that aims to provide stability and emergency assistance to local communities facing rising foreclosures and declining property values.
DED officials met last Thursday with eligible communities to discuss the Neighborhood Stabilization Program. The program, authorized under Title III of the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008, provides emergency assistance to state and local governments to help them respond to rising foreclosures and declining property values.
According to Andy Papen, compliance manager in the Division of Business and Community Services, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has allocated $42,664,187 to the Missouri state program and will be administered through the Community Development Block Grant Program in the Division of Business and Community Services. The Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008 requires states to target areas of greatest need based on the extent of foreclosures, subprime mortgages, mortgages delinquencies and mortgage defaults.
The meeting with Tier One communities, or those communities with higher than average unemployment (6.1 percent in fiscal year 2008), high concentration of low and middle income households, and above average number of high-cost loans as a percentage of housing in 2007 - explained the HUD requirements of the program and laid out a timeline for the development of a state response.
Cities with eligible census block groups were invited to the meeting. Those communities have until November 13 to submit a request for proposal to DED. The State's draft plan will be available online for public comment from November 15 through November 30.
"In the coming weeks, DED, along with the Missouri Housing Development Commission, will communicate with cities on the development of other strategies to address down-payment assistance programs and activities that address 50 percent of Median Household Income activities only," Papen said.
