AmerenUE Unveils Large-Scale Reliability Improvements in North St. Louis County
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), November 2, 2008 - City and county officials recently launched almost $4 million in AmerenUE projects to provide even greater reliability and benefit more than 2,000 households in North St. Louis County.

St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley, Florissant Mayor Robert Lowery, and Richard Mark, senior vice president of energy delivery for AmerenUE announced the improvements at McCluer North High School in Florissant. The St. Catherine and Paddock Forest sites comprise some of UE's largest residential reliability-improvement projects to date for Project Power On.

UE, a utility operating company of Ameren Corporation, is putting overhead power circuits underground along St. Catherine Street and Paddock Drive in Florissant as part of its aggressive effort to improve reliability and service for customers throughout its service area. This $2.6 million project is designed to improve electric service for 1,014 customers and improve reliability during severe weather. UE will also be placing overhead lines underground in the Paddock Forest neighborhood in North St. Louis County. That $1.2 million project will benefit 1,219 customers.

Power On is UE's aggressive effort to significantly upgrade its delivery system and enhance the environmental performance of its power plants. All St. Louis County customers directly affected by this work have been contacted by UE.

"Mayor Lowery and I both hear from constituents when their power is out, so I'm very pleased to see UE responding so aggressively to improve reliability," said Dooley. "We know UE has launched a number of projects like this and that there will be more to come. We think UE's investment will go a long way toward providing greater reliability for customers in St. Louis County."

"This area of Florissant has been greatly affected by severe weather over the last few years," said Lowery. "UE's investment in this project shows that they are listening to the concerns of Florissant residents and making a concerted effort to improve the reliability of their electric service."

Under Power On, UE is working to underground circuits most susceptible to outages and investing more than $200 million on additional tree-trimming and system inspection and maintenance. To date, UE has completed 119 undergrounding projects, with 92 more under construction. An additional 533 other projects to improve reliability are in the works.

Missouri Seniors Are Urged to Watch out for the Grandparents Scam
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), October 26, 2008 - Attorney General Jay Nixon said a trick known as the "grandparents scam" has struck at least twice in Missouri in the last few weeks. A central Missouri man used a wire transfer to send $6,000 to a person he thought was his grandson. In reality, the person who called him was a con artist claiming to be his grandchild, saying he needed money to get out of jail.

In another recent case, a southwest Missouri woman received a similar phone call from someone claiming to be her grandson, asking for $5,000 for bail money. Fortunately, the woman got suspicious and called the police, who told her it was almost certainly a scam.

Nixon has warned seniors in the Show-Me State to be on the lookout for the scam, in which callers randomly call seniors, hoping to pass themselves off as a grandchild in trouble. The caller describes being in a jam and needing money - perhaps to return from a foreign country, for car repairs or for bail money. Wanting to help their grandchildren, the seniors are then asked to send money, often by wire transfer, to the caller.

"This is about as low as it gets," Nixon said. "These crooks are striking right at the heart of these Missouri seniors, who are just trying to be there for their grandchildren when they think they're in need."

A central Missouri man almost fell victim to the scam in April, but employees at the wire transfer station alerted him to the likelihood that he was about to send $8,000 to a crook.

Nixon warns grandparents who get such calls to first verify their grandchildren's whereabouts. Also, grandparents should quiz the caller for details that only the true grandchild would know, such as family members' names or hometowns. Nixon also reminds consumers that a request for a wire transfer, especially to Canada, is a red flag for fraud. Wiring money is one of the most common ways consumers lose money to con artists.

Nearly 400,000 Families Find Mortgage Relief
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), October 26, 2008 - U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Steve Preston has announced that 400,000 families have refinanced their mortgages with HUDs affordable mortgage insurance program.

Since expanding its refinance program in September 2007, HUD'sFederal Housing Administration (FHA) has helped more distressed homeowners keep their homes by utilizing FHA's safe and affordable mortgage financing. FHA refinancing is on pace to help 500,000 families by the end of this year.

"Thanks to FHA's expanded programs, hundreds of thousands of families now have peace of mind knowing they have a stable, more affordable mortgage," said Preston. "Today, we are proud to say that FHA has helped more than 400,000 struggling families keep their homes while also creating greater liquidity in the mortgage market."

Since its creation in 1934, FHA has helped more than 35 million families become homeowners. Nationwide, the number of mortgages insured by FHA was nearly three times higher in the third quarter of calendar year 2008, compared to the same time last year. By requiring full income and employment documentation, FHA products are underwritten to ensure borrowers have the ability to repay the loan. FHA also continues to offer unprecedented loss mitigation assistance to homeowners. FHA's loss mitigation efforts have helped about 300,000 families keep their homes over the last three years.
