Neighborhood Celebrates Reopening of Reservoir Park at Compton Hill Water Tower
St. Louis city water Div workers fill the just-restored reflecting pond at Compton Hill Reservoir Park. In addition to the pond and Water Tower, the Park also contains tennis courts, a dog park, and the "Naked Truth" statue, a monument to German-American newspaper editors of the late 19th century. City Residents Celebrate Restoration of Reflecting Pond at Reservoir Park at Compton Hill Water Tower
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), October 4, 2009 - Reservoir Park, repository of millions of gallons of purified water for City of St. Louis residents for some 140 years, reclaimed an ornament of its Victorian-era aquatic heritage, October 3.

City officials and neighborhood admirers of the Park and its landmark Compton Hill Water Tower gathered at S. Grand and Shaw Blvds. to celebrate the rebuilding of a 110-year-old reflecting pond and the restoration of a lily-shaped spray fountain.

Construction of the pond and restoration of the 36-foot-wide spray fountain was a joint project of the City of St. Louis and the Water Tower and Park Preservation Society (WTPPS), a group of neighborhood residents and admirers of the park and tower.

Barbara Absher, group president, said the WTPPS began in 2004 by creating a Master Plan for improvements, with addressing the crumbling, weed-filled pond a top priority.

The City lacked resources necessary for the job, so the private group started raising funds on its own, Absher explained. "Then, about two years ago, $100,000 in City Neighborhood Improvement Funds was earmarked by then-Alderman Lewis Reed of the 6th Ward. His successor, Alderwoman Kacie Starr Triplett, continued the support when she was elected. The WTPPS contributed $59,000, which it raised from admission fees for public tours of the tower, WTPPS memberships, grants and other donations.

The City Water Div. cleared the site and contributed planting rings for waterlilies; the City Public Works Div. designed the pond, solicited bids and managed the construction. "It's worth celebrating the fact that neighborhood residents, our organizations, City officials and agencies were all able to work together to make this happen in trying economic times," Absher said.
