Health Care Costs Expected To Rise 15 Percent
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), October 12, 2003 - Experts estimate health care costs will escalate again this year by about 15 percent. Despite the fact that millions of Americans keep a close eye on their budgets, most don't take full advantage of what their health plans pay for and what benefits might be available.

Premiums pay for a lot more than visits to the doctor. In fact, a wide range of resources - like 24-hour nurse lines, online access for services and information and generic drug discounts - are included in many health plans. Other lesser-known benefits may include disease management programs, discounts on fitness memberships, massages, vitamins and herbal supplements.

Nearly 162 million Americans have employer-sponsored health care benefits. But only a fraction of them know how to make the best of their coverage. Experts advise assessing your family's health care needs and looking out for the hidden nuggets in your plan that might save you time and money and keep you well. An informed consumer is an empowered consumer. Learning how to take full advantage of your health plan benefits will reap rewards for you and your family.

Concealed Weapons Banned in City Buildings
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), October 12, 2003 - Mayor Francis G. Slay signed Executive Order 35, on Friday, which banned the carrying of concealed weapons in all City buildings, effective immediately.

Currently, there is also a bill pending at the Board of Aldermen, which would ban the carrying of concealed weapons in City buildings. As of Saturday, October 11, 2003, anyone who has a Conceal and Carry Permit from Missouri, or any other state, would be allowed to enter City buildings.

Slay signed the Executive Order today to act as a stop gap measure pending the final passage of the Board of Aldermen's bill.

In a statement, the Mayor said that "The citizens of St. Louis City have spoken loudly, and very clearly on this issue. They overwhelmingly do not support carrying concealed weapons. One of my top priorities is protecting the safety of everyone who works, and visits City buildings."

Anyone entering City buildings with a concealed weapon will be escorted off the premises by the St. Louis police department.

First Missouri Lawsuits Filed Againt Spam
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), October 12, 2003 - Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon has filed the first two lawsuits under a new state law designed to curb unsolicited commercial e-mail, better known as spam.

In an announcement, Nixon stated that defendants violated the law by sending spam to Missouri e-mail accounts without the messages being labeled as required and, in one case, by sending additional spam to those accounts after being requested to stop.

"Spam is the unwanted cyber-salesman with its foot in your e-mail door," Nixon said. "These lawsuits to enforce Missouri's new law are a way to close that door."

The new Missouri law, which took effect Aug. 28, requires spam to be labeled with the phrase "ADV:" in the first four characters of the subject line, or "ADV:ADLT" if the message contains adult material. The law also makes it illegal to send unsolicited commercial e-mail to any Missourian with an e-mail address who has asked the sender not to send any additional spam. The first lawsuit was filed against Phillip Nixon, of Palm Beach, Fla. The lawsuit says Phillip Nixon sent at least five unsolicited commercial e-mails soliciting the sale of architectural plan to the e-mail address nospam@moago.org, an address maintained by the Attorney General's Office. The spam messages were not labeled as required, and continued to be sent even after reply messages were sent directing them to stop.

"That e-mail address should have been his first clue to not send spam," Attorney General Nixon says. A hearing on the Attorney General's request for a temporary restraining order is scheduled for today.

The second lawsuit is against Fundetective.com, of Boca Raton, Fla., which sent several spam messages advertising such services as payday loans and the gathering of personal information. Nixon says none of the spam messages from Fundetective.com were labeled as required.

Nixon is asking the St. Louis City Circuit Court to issue injunctions to prevent the defendants from further violations of the law, and he is seeking civil penalties of up to $5,000 for each violation.

"Spam is the number one complaint my office receives from small businesses, where employees typically have to spend several minutes each day cleaning out their mailboxes from ads for lower mortgage rates, cheaper prescription drugs and quack health remedies," Nixon said.

Boeing Employees' Fund Donates More Than $2 Million to Charities
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), October 12, 2003 - Employees of Boeing in St. Louis have reached $2 million in donations to local charities through their Employees' Community Fund (ECF).

The largest block of donations - more than $865,000 - has been distributed among 221 health and human services groups in the area, including organizations such as St. Patrick Center and Youth in Need. Nearly $300,000 has been earmarked for local arts/culture and civic/environmental agencies, including the St. Louis Zoo and Operation Brightside. About $213,000 will support education organizations such as Mentor St. Louis and the Junior Achievement program. About $600,000 is going to the United Way of Greater St. Louis.

"Our Boeing St. Louis employees have always stepped up to the plate to help those in need. I'm proud to say they've done it again, providing financial help that will touch lives right here in our St. Louis area community," said Pat Finneran, St. Louis regional executive, for Boeing.

The money contributed by Boeing St. Louis employees is part of a total $34.7 million raised by Boeing employees company-wide through ECF, the world's largest employee-owned charitable organization.

Among the organizations receiving ECF funding this year is St. Patrick Center, which operates a first-of-its-kind restaurant training center for homeless clients in St. Louis. "St. Patrick Center recognizes the ECF has a very deep commitment to improving St. Louis," says Jan Rasmussen, vice president, Development, Communications and Volunteer Services at St. Patrick Center. "The funding received from the ECF this year will help provide training to 55 clients, helping them achieve dignity and self-sufficiency."
