John Burroughs School to Host St. Louis World Food Day
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), October 3, 2013 - Two years ago, John Burroughs senior Don Soffer founded the St. Louis World Food Day to increase awareness, understanding and informed year-around action to alleviate hunger.

This year, on October 16, from 9 a.m - 7 p.m., one thousand volunteers (ages 7 and older) will work one-hour shifts to pack 200,000 rice/soy protein and macaroni and cheese meals to feed hungry children in St. Louis and Tanzania. Each packet feeds up to six children.

Doug Pitt (Brad's brother), hockey player Chris Pronger, Fred Bird (St. Louis Cardinals) and Louie (St. Louis Blues) will make appearances.

OPEN HOUSE: Bike St. Louis Project at Forest Park Visitors Center
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), October 2, 2013 - Great Rivers Greenway and the City of St. Louis are working to improve the Bike St. Louis network in St. Louis City.

The two groups are seeking public input on the third phase of the Bike St. Louis Project and will hold an open house on Oct. 3, from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m, at Forest Park Visitors Center, located at 5595 Grand Drive on the north side of Forest Park.

The open house that will give residents the opportunity to review and discuss plans, which includes proposals to expand and upgrade a total of 100 miles of on-street bicycle routes in St. Louis City. Proposed upgrades include increased signage throughout the city, and six bicycle-parking corrals to be placed throughout the City.

Since 2004, the Bike St. Louis project has developed 84 miles of on-street bicycle routes in St. Louis City and St. Louis County, helping to promote cycling as a viable transportation option and creating bicycle connections from downtown St. Louis to destinations throughout the region.


'St. Louis Light The Night Walk' Aims to be in Top 10 of 200 Walk Sites Across the Nation
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), September 29, 2013 - On Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, the Gateway Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society hosted its 15th Annual Light The Night Walk. The St. Louis Walk is currently ranked 12 among 200 walk sites across the country, which raises funds for the 1.1 million Americans living with a blood cancer. The St. Louis walk celebrated $930,000 raised but supporters have until January 31 to continue the fight for their $1 million goal.

15,000 friends, family members and co-workers carried illuminated lanterns to shine a light on the dark world of cancer which raised funds for lifesaving research and support for people battling blood cancer. Currently there are 67 drugs newly FDA-approved as cancer treatments since 2000, 28 were first approved as treatments for blood cancer patients. Sixteen of 28 have been repurposed to treat patients with solid tumors like breast, colon, lung and liver cancers.

The Light The Night Walk is the biggest contributor in LLS' investment of $11.6 million to researchers in the Gateway Chapter. Additionally, in fiscal year 2013, the Gateway Chapter contributed $73,600 in financial aid to patients, provided co-pay assistance of more than $1.18 million, served more than 5,000 patients and their families with financial support, education and support groups, and was active in more than 600 schools on cancer and volunteerism and supported children returning to school after treatment.

"We had more than 500 teams fundraising for this event, but on Sept. 27 they became one team for one goal: to help patients with blood cancers live better, longer lives by finding a cure," said Richard J. Mark, Light The Night Corporate Chair, CEO and President of Ameren Illinois."

Light The Night, which has until January 31 to raise $1 million, was possible in special part to multiple community partners, including:
