Carondelet Park Rec Plex to Open in November
by Betty Moore, SLFP.com
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), September 13, 2009 - It has taken 8 years in a process initiated by Representative Richard Gephardt in 2001, nearly $21 million, and the vision of many residents and city officials in the Carondelet neighborhood to bring about what is being viewed as one of the nicest community centers in the City of St. Louis.
Since March of 2006, motorists buzzing past the Loughborough exit on I-55 have watched with great curiousity how the contemporary structure has risen from an open field at the northeast corner of Carondelet Park to become the new Carondelet Park Rec Plex. The state-of-the-art, 76,000 square-foot, handicap-accessible facility will be powered by the YMCA. Scheduled to open in less than two months, the ambitious undertaking has seen a flurry of workers putting on the finishing touches.
In a hardhat media tour, Thursday, September 10, led by YMCA staff, Mayor Francis G. Slay and other city officials were offered a preview of the work that has been completed. "Wow, this is much nicer than I had imagined," said the Mayor enthusiastically, as he walked through the 5,480 sq. ft. fitness area on the lower level into the indoor pool area.
The vast expanse of concrete and exposed steel beams, although still covered in dust and construction debris and exposed, will soon be filled with the laughter of children and families enjoying a recreational experience in what is promised to be much more than just YMCA swimming lessons.

The Carondelet Park Rec Plex will feature a unique 142,391-gallon indoor pool with a 24 ft. tall, 176.5 ft.-long slide, a 115 ft. long lazy river, and an outdoor water park with a concession stand. In addition to the whirlpool, sauna and steamrooms, the facility will have 2 court gymnasiums with an elevated track.
The facility will also host fitness classes for adult and seniors, summer camps for youth and teens, and community outreach programs in multipurpose rooms. The outdoor pool complex is scheduled to open in summer of 2010
In a statement, Dan Schulze, Executive Director of the Carondelet Family YMCA, said, "In cooperation with the City of St. Louis Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry, we've created a place where children, families and adults can come together to practice healthy principles, socialize and feel a sense of family. We're here to support and serve the community, and the new facility features the resources to provide even more," stated Schulze.
That sentiment was echoed in a conversation with Alderman Matt Villa, Ward 11, following the tour. "The Carondelet will offer will be many more programs not found at other YMCA facilities. Carondelet Park has undergone a renaissance of sorts over the last fifteen years," stated Villa. "When the walking and jogging paths were put in, I've noticed a huge increase in usage in the park."
Villa commented that the construction of the new complex has also encouraged new families to move into the neighborhood. He stated that the facility will provide 200 new part-time jobs for local residents. As the membership grows, the positions may develop into full-time positions.
Villa stated that memberships in the Carondelet Park Rec Plex will match those of the South City Family YMCA and special membership arrangements will offer access to all 18 branches of the YMCA of Greater St. Louis. He said that there will be financial scholarship assistance to ensure access for all city residents and non-residents looking for social and recreational activities.
The LEED certified Carondelet Park Rec Plex, located at 930 Holly Hills Ave, will be open seven days a week. For membership information, call 314-768-9622.

YMCA staff lead St. Louis Mayor Francis G. Slay and other city officials in a hardhat tour of the new 76,000 square-foot Carondelet Park Rec Plex, located approximately a half-mile from the old Carondelet Family YMCA, where Slay took swimming lessons as a kid.

Nurses and Retirement Security: A Looming Crisis?
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), September 6, 2009 - Nurses appear to be taking far better care of their patients than they are their financial futures, according to a survey released today by the Center for American Nurses and the Women's Institute for a Secure Retirement (WISER).
The Nurse Investor Education Survey reveals that nurses may be saving for retirement, but few are planning and investing to meet retirement needs. In fact, most nurses say they do not know what those needs will be.
"The good news is that most nurses are putting money away for retirement," said Wylecia Harris, Executive Director at the Center for American Nurses. "What's troubling is that less than half have tried to figure out how much income they will need when they get there." See Community Health News
