Nurses and Retirement Security: A Looming Crisis?
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), September 6, 2009 - Nurses appear to be taking far better care of their patients than they are their financial futures, according to a survey released today by the Center for American Nurses and the Women's Institute for a Secure Retirement (WISER).
The Nurse Investor Education Survey reveals that nurses may be saving for retirement, but few are planning and investing to meet retirement needs. In fact, most nurses say they do not know what those needs will be.
"The good news is that most nurses are putting money away for retirement," said Wylecia Harris, Executive Director at the Center for American Nurses. "What's troubling is that less than half have tried to figure out how much income they will need when they get there." See Community Health News

AFT and U.S. Education Czar Salute City School Progress
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), August 27, 2009 - The American Federation of Teachers president Randi Weingarten kicked off an eight-city back-to-school tour on Thursday at a news conference at the Lexington Elementary School in North St. Louis.
Weingarten was joined by local and state union and education leaders, including St. Louis Mayor Francis G. Slay and U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan, who applauded the union-district collaboration that has yielded several innovative reform programs.
The St. Louis Plan is a union-district partnership program to improve teacher quality that is starting this school year. The district wide peer assistance and review program utilizes mentor teachers, to observe, evaluate and offer assistance to every new teacher. Each mentor will work with no more than eight teachers.
"A very productive collaborative partnership between the union and the school district is now bearing fruit for students and teachers. There are innovative programs in St. Louis public schools now that can be models for other cities," Weingarten said. She said the good working relationships illustrates that a "with us, not to us" approach is the right way to go for students, teachers, and school staff.
"Teaching presents its own set of daunting challenges, particularly for new teachers. The St. Louis Plan will go a long way in providing the nurturing and support that brand-new teachers need to do a great job for kids and stay in the profession," Weingarten said.
St. Louis Public Schools Superintendent Kelvin Adams and AFT St. Louis President Mary J. Armstrong emphasized that students and teachers are benefiting from the positive partnership between the union and the district.
