City Library to Open Facility in Old Post Office
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), August 29, 2004 - The St. Louis Public Library will open Central Express, a satellite branch to Central Library, in a prime corner of the Old Post Office when renovation is completed.
The new facility, which will 7,000 square feet, is being planned as a quick-service browsing library for downtown workers and residents. A wide selection of fiction, non-fiction, DVDs, and CDs will be displayed.
In an announcement, Board President Jack Garvey stated "We know this new location will bring the St. Louis Public Library within easy walking distance of over 30,000 downtown workers. Plus, residential and commercial development is happening at an amazing pace all around the Old Post Office. The Board wants the St. Louis Public Library to be active in the revival of downtown. This is an opportunity to give the Library a great location while it is still available and affordable."
The Library will join the Court of Appeals, Webster University, The St. Louis Business Journal, the Pasta House Company, and others as tenants in the historic building.
The construction schedule by The DESCO Group, developers of the Old Post Office, calls for Central Express to open in approximately 18 months.

MoDOT Unveils Plans for Bridge Replacements
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), August 25, 2004 - The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) held a public meeting, Wednesday, August 25, to show plans for closing and replacing the Chouteau Bridge from Vandeventer to 39th Street and removing the Vandeventer overpass bridge from I-64 ramps to Chouteau.
Don Bellon, owner of Bellon Wrecking and Salvage and Bellon's Market, discussed his concerns and the impact of the 2-year Chouteau Bridge replacement project with MoDOT's Project Manager Lesley Hoffarth. Bellon's businesses are located at Vandeventer and Chouteau in the proposed construction zone.

On Thursday, August 26, MoDOT will hold a public meeting to show plans for closing and replacing the bridges on Market at Compton and Compton over I-64. The meeting will be held at the Harris-Stowe State College's Emerson Theatre, 3026 Laclede Ave., in the City of St. Louis, between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
The purpose of the open houses is to present to the public the design plans, closures, and detour routes. The design team will have maps, environmental documentation, handouts, and other detail information prepared for the public to comment on.
The Chouteau Bridge, which is nearly 100 years old, is being closed and rebuilt because it's in severely deteriorated condition. The bridge is not earthquake resistant and traffic is now restricted to using two lanes in the center of the bridge. The proposed improvements are as follows: replace the Chouteau bridge from Vandeventer to 39th Street, remove the Vandeventer overpass bridge from I-64 ramps to Chouteau, reconstruct the Chouteau/Vandeventer and I-64 ramps/Vandeventer intersections, lighting, signing, and signals with pedestrian accommodations.
This $16 million dollar project is scheduled to start construction in winter 2004 and be open to traffic after two years.
Janet Huenke, a concerned citizen, talked with MoDOT Project Designer Daniel Savageau at the Compton Avenue Bridge meeting, held Thursday at the Harris-Stowe State College's Emerson Performing Arts Theatre.

The Compton Ave. Bridge and the Market St. Bridge have deteriorated beyond repair and are not earthquake resistant. Once replaced, the Compton Ave. Bridge will have wider sidewalks and pedestrian level lighting.
This $11 million dollar project is scheduled to start construction in April 2005
and be open to traffic by the end of the year. MoDOT planned this project collaboratively with the city of St. Louis to be completed in one construction season. The city will be able to use Compton Ave. as a detour route once they begin construction on the Jefferson viaduct.
"We look forward to hearing from the public and showing them what we've come up with," stated Project Manager, Lesley Solinger Hoffarth. An open-house format will be used, and persons may discuss the project and offer comments at any time between the scheduled hours. For more information, call MoDOT Senior Public Affairs Specialist Debbie Allen at (314) 340-4163.
