St. Louis Officials Break Ground for O'Fallon Park Recreation Complex in North City
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), July 29, 2010 - Mayor Francis G. Slay today joined Comptroller Darlene Green, Board of Alderman President Lewis Reed, Alderman Terry Kennedy, Alderman Antonio French, Alderman Freeman Bosley Sr., Parks Director Gary Bess, a representative from Congressman Clay's office and Board of Public Service President Rich Bradley for a groundbreaking ceremony in O'Fallon Park to celebrate the start of construction for the City's newest recreation center.
This new facility, located in O'Fallon Park, is slated to open by December 31, 2011. The O'Fallon Recreation Complex, along with a similar facility opened in November 2009 on the City's south side, are the first recreation centers built in the City since 1971.
"I'm proud to be here to break ground on what will be a state-of-the-art recreation facility in north St. Louis," said Mayor Slay. "Today's groundbreaking shows the City's commitment to improving the quality of life in North St. Louis. This building will be an amenity for nearby neighborhoods and will provide a fun, safe place for children, adults and seniors to go after school and on weekends. It will help make the community healthier. And this new quality recreation will make our northside neighborhoods better places to live and work that are more competitive with surrounding communities that have similar facilities. The positive impacts of today's investment will be enjoyed by this community for decades to come."
The O'Fallon Recreation Complex will be situated on 13 acres of land in the northwest portion of O'Fallon Park near I-70 and West Florissant Avenue. The two-story, 79,000 square foot recreation complex will feature an aquatic center including an indoor splash pool with a triple loop slide, motion pool, children's pools, sauna, steam room and spa, plus an outdoor lap pool. Other amenities of the recreation complex include a gymnasium, indoor track and fitness center, locker rooms, a community center, multipurpose rooms and a lobby.
The project is designed to be LEED certified and S. M. Wilson, the project's contractor, and the City of St. Louis hope to achieve the Silver rating in the LEED classification system after the project is completed. KAI is the project architect. The total project cost is estimated at $23 million.
City officials joined St. Louis Mayor Francis G. Slay for special ground breaking ceremonies for the O'Fallon Park Recreation Complex in North City.
