Historic Carondelet
Branch to be Restored and Renovated
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), July 24, 2004 - The St. Louis Public Library has announcing plans for the complete restoration and renovation of its historic Carondelet Branch, 6800 Michigan Avenue.
In continuous service since it opened on June 9, 1908, the building is a landmark in the Carondelet neighborhood and a beautiful example of the Carnegie libraries that transformed library services in the United States.
The Carondelet Branch cost $78,000 to build in 1908. The Library estimates
that the renovation of the building will cost about $2 million. Construction
should begin next spring and take 12 months to complete. The Library is
working with the firm of Manske Architects on the project. Manske, chosen
for Library work through a bid process, was also the architect on the
Library's enormously successful Carpenter Branch renovation and expansion,
another historic Carnegie library project.
Carondelet's renovation will bring together the best of both worlds; classic
architecture and tradition with modern features and services. Fiber-optic
networks will bring patrons the world through the St. Louis Public Library's
Internet services and databases. New power systems will drive the
state-of-the-art computers available for public use. A new elevator and
handicapped accessible entry will give patrons easy access to the entire
building. Also, new lighting will illuminate new reading and study areas as
well as updated collections of books CDs, DVDs, and other materials.
Carondelet's large auditorium and community room will be completely
renovated and made accessible to the handicapped for the first time.
Entirely new public restrooms will serve the public. A new landscaped
parking lot will be built next to the Branch.
Waller McGuire, the Library's Interim Executive Director, stated that, "The Carondelet Branch has been well-used and well-loved by St. Louis. It's time
to renew it and give it a new life in time for it's second century of
service. This is a fascinating, vital area of the city and we are excited by
the idea of a shining and restored Carondelet Branch at the neighborhood's
center."
The project is part of the Library's ongoing renovation and construction
program, begun in 1995 and involving major renovations and improvements at
every Branch in the Library system before it is finished. Eleven St. Louis
Public Library Branches have been built or renovated since the program began
and over $30 million spent on improvements to Branches in St. Louis
neighborhoods. Two projects remain after Carondelet: Cabanne Branch on Union
Boulevard and Machacek Branch on Scanlan Avenue will come next.

City Lands $1.4 Million Grant To Prevent and Respond to Domestic Violence
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com) July 24, 2004 - Mayor Francis G. Slay announced Friday that the Department of Justice has awarded the City of St. Louis $1.4 million to prevent and respond to domestic violence, the second largest grant in the country.
"Domestic violence devastates families," Slay stated. "With this grant, we will do a better job of helping the victims of domestic violence."
The President's Family Justice Center Initiative, unveiled by President Bush in October 2003, is a pilot program designed to make a victim's search for help and justice more efficient and effective by bringing professionals who provide an array of necessary services together under one roof. The Justice Department's Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) has taken the lead on this pilot program to develop comprehensive domestic violence service and support centers in these 15 communities across the country.
The funds from the grant will secure and develop a physical location, as well as oversee the implementation of this project in the City of St. Louis.
In a statement, Paul Zemitzsch, Chairman, City of St. Louis Family Violence Council, said "When we are talking about an issue as serious as domestic violence, it's difficult to say this is a great day. But, this is a great day for the City of St. Louis because we have worked together to bring to our community a new and more centralized way to help those in need."
More than $20 million has been awarded to 15 communities across the country. Several hundred communities nationwide were vying for the funds.
