Cool Down St. Louis Prepares for NExt Heat-WAVE
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), July 9, 2009 - As temperatures rose into the nineties, Cool Down St. Louis, the regional, all-volunteer advocacy, and energy assistance charity, covering about 16 Missouri and Illinois counties, including the City of St. Louis, and AmerenUE teamed up Thursday again for the Annual AmerenUD/Cool Down St. Louis Cooling Caravan.
St. Louis Mayor Francis G Slay, Richard Mark, SVP, MO Energy Delivery, AmerenUE, and St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley assisted volunteers in loading 100 brand new GE 5,000 BTU Energy Star Qualified Air Conditioners onto trucks and vans to distribute the donated units to qualifying people in need.
"AmerenUE is doing an outstanding job," stated St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley. "They donated 100 air conditioners. This is the third year that they have done this and it does make a difference. Also, Vaterott has joined the effort and if people have an air conditioner that needs repair, or a used one, they can take it and have it fixed."
"More important," continued Dooley, "we are talking about saving people's lives. That's the senior citizens and the disabled individuals and the low income people with children. Those are the ones that are vunerable in our community and we have to watch out for them."
Dooley emphasized that it's all about the quality of life in the St. Louis metropolitan area. "There's no boundary between the city and the county because we are working together for a safer and better place for people to live."
Richard Mark said that AmerenUE is involved in similar events in other counties all the way to Jefferson City and south past Cape Girardeau. "There are a lot of people who need help and what we find is that many people can't afford the cost of buying an air-conditioner. These are very energy efficient and only consume a small amount of electric per day. That's just pennies per day."
Mark said that since the company can't provide discounts for seniors because it's a regulated company with rates set by the state, they look for other opportunities to support people with needs like providing air-conditioners. "We also have the "Clean Slate" and the "Dollar More" programs that help people pay their bills. Since we can't negotiate our rates, this is a way of providing customers with energy assistance," stated Mark.
Cool Down St. Louis is still appealing for on-line donations at cooldownstlouis.org or checks may be made payable to Cool Down St. Louis, c/o UMB Bank, P.O. Box 868, St. Louis, MO 63188.
