Ground breaking ceremonies were held, June 7, for Botanical Heights Development in the former McRee Town.
Botanical Heights Development to Create New Neighborhood
by Bob Moore, SLFP.com
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com) June 7, 2004 - An offical ground breaking was held for Botanical Heights, the largest residential project in the City of St. Louis' recent history.
Mayor Francis Slay, Senator Kit Bond, representatives from the Missouri Botanical Garden, the Garden District Commission, McBride & Son Homes, Inc., local officials and area residents of McRee Town attended the ceremony at the corner of Blaine and 39th Street.
Following the ceremony, Senator Bond told Saint Louis Front Page that one of his priorities was to get affordable housing programs and construction programs and ways to fund them. "One of the great needs we have, particularly in St. Louis, is affordable housing that low income people can access with assistance," stated Bond.
The development was announced last June as part of a master plan to revitalize the McRee Town, located north of Hwy 44 and the Missouri Botanical Garden. McBride & Son Homes plans to invest an estimated $40 million to build more than 400 residential units. Additional funding of $12 has been raised through a public-private partnership.

Senator Bond Hails Launch of Catch The Dream St. Louis
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com) June 6, 2004 - U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Alphonso Jackson and Mayor Francis G. Slay announced that affordable new homes will rise in St. Louis thanks to a new $15 million public-private venture launched by a collaboration of housing industry leaders.
Freddie Mac, U.S. Bank, Pulaski Financial Corporation, Mary "One" Enterprises/ Mary "One" Home Team Realty, Beyond Housing/Neighborhood Housing Services of St. Louis, Mother's Way/Opportunities Industrialization Centers of the Midwest forged an alliance to create an innovative approach to homeownership called Catch The Dream St. Louis.
Catch The Dream St. Louis is designed to expand affordable homeownership opportunities in the St. Louis area, especially for moderate-income and minority families. The new initiative will provide access to special low- downpayment mortgages with flexible credit terms, proven homeownership education and counseling programs, and HUD funds earmarked for helping qualified borrowers with downpayments and closing costs.
"All families deserve access to decent, safe and affordable housing," stated Senator Kit Bond, Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee that funds the Department of Housing and Urban Development. "It will be exciting to watch this new partnership in St. Louis transform the lives of so many families. I will continue to work to find innovative ways to expand the dream of home ownership to more families in Missouri and nationwide."
"Freddie Mac plays an important role in helping families realize their dreams of homeownership," said Housing and Urban Development Secretary Alphonso Jackson. "We look forward to Freddie Mac's continued emphasis on making affordable housing available to the underserved persons in our nation - - those who have been shut out of homeownership in the past."
"Homeownership is without question the most valuable tool families and neighborhoods have for building net worth and stability. We are very pleased to be working with HUD, Freddie Mac and all of the other partners in this initiative to open up the door to homeownership throughout the region for more families -- in particular minority families who have not had homeownership opportunities in the past," Mayor Francis Slay stated.
"Freddie Mac puts its mission to expand homeownership opportunities first. We are delighted to join forces with HUD Secretary Jackson, Mayor Slay, U.S. Bank and the other participants to inject new energy into our shared commitment to dramatically increase minority homeownership in St. Louis and the nation," said Craig Nickerson, Freddie Mac's vice president of Expanding Markets.
"Catch The Dream St. Louis dedicates a team with exceptional ability and resourcefulness to the task of giving more of America's families the opportunity to build personal wealth and stronger neighborhoods through personal homeownership," stated Nickerson.
Catch The Dream St. Louis builds on Freddie Mac's effort to expand St. Louis homeownership opportunities, which has included the financing of $25 billion worth of mortgages for more than 214,000 local families over the past five years. Catch The Dream St. Louis is a part of the Blueprint for the American Dream, a national effort the Bush Administration launched in 2002 with Freddie Mac, the National Association of Realtors, the National Association of Home Builders, and other key housing industry organizations to add 5.5 million minority homeowners.
