Route 66 Motor Tour to Cross Old Chain of Rocks Bridge
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com) May 23, 2004 - "Celebrate, Discover and Explore Route 66" is the theme for this year's Route 66 Motor Tour, sponsored by the Route 66 Association of Illinois the weekend of June 4 - 6.
A highlight of the Motor Tour is a drive across the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge to be held on Saturday, June 5. Registration is at the Missouri bridge entrance, 7 Ð 8:15 a.m. The Motor Tour, escorted by a 51 Ford Police Cruiser from the Illinois State Police Museum, will commence at 8:15 a.m.
The Old Chain of Rocks Bridge, celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2004, was once part of historic Route 66. The bridge was closed to vehicular traffic in 1968 after the opening of I-270 and its parallel bridges, which span the Mississippi River and the barge canal. Trailnet and the City of Madison, IL reopened the Bridge in 1999 as a pedestrian/bicycle bridge.
The bridge is a key component of the Confluence Greenway, a 200-square mile greenway and trail system being developed in both states and links trails on both sides of the Mississippi River. The Confluence Greenway is a conservation, heritage and recreation corridor being developed in the heart of bi-state St. Louis, from the St. Louis and East St. Louis riverfronts to St. Charles, Missouri and Grafton, Illinois.
The Motor Tour is a rare occasion for motorists to drive their vehicle across the Bridge. Motorists are encouraged to bring their camera. The Motor Tour includes stopping at the Edwardsville-Glen Carbon Chamber of Commerce ÒFestival 66Ó celebration on Friday, June 4 in addition to stops at historic Route 66 venues as it makes its way to Springfield, IL.
For more information on the Motor Tour, call Ollie Schwallenstecker, Tour Co-chair at 618/585-3081.

City Health Department Prepares For West Nile Virus Season
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com) May 2, 2004 - West Nile Virus season is just a handful of warm days away. To help stave off the swarms of mosquitoes that late spring and summer can bring, the St. Louis City Department of Health is starting its larvaciding campaign on Monday, May 3, 2004.
The Health Department's Vector Control Program will begin the seasonal larvaciding with the River Des Peres, which is historically a major breeding site for mosquitoes. Vector Control Personnel will treat the river basin to prevent the growth of mosquito larvae into adult mosquitoes. The treatments last approximately 150 days. The Health Department will be using Altosid XR, a larvacide product that is safe to fish and aquatic life. Vector Control workers will periodically check the river water to determine if it needs to be retreated.
This is the first of several major preventive tasks that the Health Department will undertake to protect the public from mosquito-borne West Nile Virus disease. An intense campaign throughout the season will focus on controlling the mosquito population in the City.
Waste tire collection is a vital part of this campaign and a priority concern in the City. St. Louis citizens are asked to bring out any waste tires they have for collection on Operation Brightside Blitz weekends. Operation Brightside, the Forestry Division and the Refuse Division will pick up these tires on the designated collection dates.
Citizens can play a key role in protecting themselves and their neighbors from West Nile Virus infection by eliminating places for mosquitoes to breed on their property. Any standing water is a potential breeding site and should be eliminated. Clogged rain gutters, discarded tires and any uncovered containers can all be sources of standing water. Ornamental garden ponds and birdbaths should be treated with mosquito dunks available at garden shops. To report waste tires in the community or mosquito problems, citizens should call the Citizen's Service Bureau at 314-622-4800. For other questions about West Nile Virus, call Vector Control at 314-622-4252.
