ST. LOUIS (SLFP.com), April 29, 2008 - Over 30,000 AME Church delegates from across the country and internationally are expected to attend the AME's Quadrennial Convention, which will take place in downtown St. Louis this summer over the holiday, July 4 - 11, 2008.
In a press conference at the Mayor's Office at City Hall, AME Church leaders discussed the mission of the church and its potential $30 million economic impact on the St. Louis community.
"We wanted to showcase the quality of the Renaissance Hotel in the downtown area," stated Bishop Bryant, Presiding Prelate 5th District.
"The local government has worked with us in bringing this conference to St. Louis. We know that this will bring millions to the community and that the community will be better off after we have left," stated Bishop Bryant. He noted that the fireworks, Arch and baseball games will give the members a wonderful time for families who accompany the delegates.
Bishop Bryant said that AME Church is building a Wyndham Hotel in Chesterfield. He said that Washington University has partnered with them in building an adjoining conference center for a total package. "We believe in trying to make our dollars work as a people. If we do things collectively, it would be of benefit to our people, so we believe in economic development ventures that put money back into the community."
The AME is the oldest Black denomination in North America, founded in 1787, where a group of slaves and free persons - led by Richard Allen - walked out of St. George's Methodist Church in Philadelphia, purchased an old blacksmith's shop, and started worship there. The AME Church grew, establishing a dozen colleges, a hospital, and a newspaper.
