St. Louis Cardinals Host Green Week
by Bob Moore, SLFP.com
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), April 28, 2010 - The St. Louis Cardinals hosted, "Unplug, Drive Up and Drop off", an electronics recycling event on the site of Ballpark Village, in collaboration with the Partnership for Downtown St. Louis, WITS, Waste Management and Paradowski Creative.
Cars, vans and trucks lined up on the parking lot south of the Hilton at the Ballpark Hotel to drop off old electronics to the FREE Annual Downtown Unplugged event on April 28, 2010, from Noon - 6 p.m. Community volunteers from Waste Managment and the St. Louis Cardinals, along with workers from HR staffing and Labor Ready Temp Services, were onhand to help unload the equipment.
Angela Haas, president of Web Innovations & Technology Services, Inc. (WITS), stated that her company has been recycling 6 - 7 million lbs. of equipment every year since 2002 so it doesn't go back into landfills. WITS receives equipment through donations from 43 events a year.
"The equipment is not biodegradeable, but it is recycleable," stated Haas. "We refurbish what we can and donate computers back to the community. The rest we break it down into parts and components which can be reused in other things. Some equipment is ground up, crushed, and turned into other products. And, because we are a charitable organization, the donations can be written off by people who donate."
Anyone can drop off - FOR FREE - unused or unwanted electronic equipment at trailers located in the Ballpark Village parking lot, located at Walnut Street and South Broadway. In return, the first 1,000 people to donate each day will receive a buy-one, get-one free St. Louis Cardinals ticket offer. Even if you don't work or live downtown, everyone is encouraged to recycle their old TVs, monitors, etc. The event continues April 29, 2010, from 7 a.m. - 2 pm.
On Friday, April 30, the St. Louis Cardinals will collect unwanted athletic equipment at the Busch Stadium gates for donation to the Redbird Rookies, the flagship program of Cardinals Care.
The week will conclude with Bike to Busch on Saturday, May 1. The event, sponsored by Great Rivers Greenway, is intended to promote environmentally-friendly methods of transportation. All bikers will receive a discounted ticket and be treated to free bike parking in the Ballpark Village. For more information, see Busch Stadium

by Bob Moore, SLFP.com
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), April 25, 2010 - For the first time, seven agencies that serve people with developmental disabilities came together to walk, run or roll for people of all abilities at the 6th Annual Walk Run 'n Roll, Saturday, April 24, 2010, in Tower Grove Park.
Albert & Deidre Pujols served as honorary chairs of the event. Corporate teams, families and individuals walked, ran and rolled (i.e. skates, wheelchairs, strollers and wagons) for pledged donations.
Adam Goldberg, offensive line with the St. Louis Rams, was on hand to lead the Walk as Grand Marshall. In a conversation prior to the start of the event, Goldberg said, "My wife and I have been coming to do this walk, run 'n roll for the past four years. We're really happy that it's growing into what it has become now. It's not just about Life Skills any more. It's now seven area charities that all benefit people with disabilies and people of all abilities. We're proud to bring our kids along and teach them about giving back to the community."
KTVI Fox 2's Glenn Zimmerman, KPLR 11's Christine Buck and McGraw Milhaven from KTRS served as co-emcees. National health and fitness guru Heather Hawk lead participants in an aerobic warm-up.
The 6th Annual Walk Run 'n Roll also featured an array of entertainment, including live music provided by Wite Lite, zumba classes from Club Fitness, face painting and a bounce house.
Organizers raised more than $100,000 which will benefit seven local non-profits serving people with developmental disabilities: Life Skills, Rainbow Village, Pathways to Independence, Giant Steps, The Center for Autism Education, Emmaus Homes and the Pujols Family Foundation.

St. Louis City Partners with Boeing for 2010 Open Streets
by Bob Moore, SLFP.com
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), April 22, 2010 - From Aerospace to bicycle space, Boeing is now taking the lead support for the health and well-being of the St. Louis community.
In a press conference held this morning at Old Post Office Plaza, Mayor Francis G. Slay and President and CEO of Boeing Defense, Space, & Security, Dennis Muilenburg announced the City's partnership with Boeing to present the 2010 Open Streets series.
"This event is meant to encourage St. Louisans to get physical activity, to explore their City, and to interact with each other," said Mayor Slay. "Boeing understands that this will be an important event for the City of St. Louis."
Because Boeing is committed to activities that promote health and fitness, the company has agreed to be the major corporate sponsor. The emphasis on well-being is also personal for Muilenburg.
"I've always been a big bicycling fan and so it's one of my favorite hobbies," said Muilenburg in an interview following the announcement. "As part of our aerospace efforts here in St. Louis, I think investing in our employees in a way that drives health and well-being is not only good for our business, good for our customers and it's good for the community. So, this is all about the health and well-being of our team."
During the first Open Streets event on May 1, 2010, five miles of City streets from Forest Park and Kingshighway to Old Post Office Plaza will be closed to vehicular traffic, 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. During that time, walkers, runners, and cyclists will be encouraged to enjoy the car-free streets. Three activity hubs located along the length of the route will host a variety of fun activities - aerobics, Zumba, hula-hooping, yoga, walking tours, and safety and health demonstrations.
